One nice thing about the 4/4 and the Zenith V32 carb, is that you can drop the float bowl, similar to removing the float bowl covers off the SUs. John, I bought a TR-7 last June to take me on some of the British car runs till I am able to finish my Morgan ( paint and interior). I spent many hours trying to get it to run reliably and failed so decided to take it down completely. Rebuild of motor, bearing, seals, springs, shocks, brakes etc. I took the fuel tank out and found 1 gallon of water in the tank along with eight gallons of fuel at about a dollar a quart. I gave the fuel to a friend for his tractor. After I got things back together again I sent an e mail to the guy I bought the car from telling him I was now having fun with the car but didn't appreciate him selling me a car with a gallon of water in the tank. He told me he had never had such a problem and on farther questioning of his twelve year old twins , one boy said, it was not me dad and the other boy said, welllll maybe I did it dad. They where playing in the car and put water in it for gas. It does make a lot of mess to clean. I had to have the tank totally rebuilt at a fair cost. All is well now with 2300k on the new motor but our winter is coming quickly too. Good to see a few entries in the 'team site. (Part 1 of 2) With the temps in the high 60s and low 70s, I thought I should try and take the Morgan out for another run. You all remember the last time, about 2 weeks ago. Came home on a tow truck. Well this time, she fired right up, after having cleaned the tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, and carb. So I figured we were good to go. But I decided to stay in the neighbor hood for a while. Just in case. We went about 3/4 of a mile from my dad house (where I store the car) and then I was going the head back. But dad, who was riding shot gun, said we should go get gas. Well the gas statioin was less than 1/2 mi. from where I was going to turn around, and everything was going well. So I decided to head over to the gas station. Got there and shut her down. Then saw $3.39 on the pump! No way, gas was only $2.98 at the stations by my house. There has to be someplace that's cheaper around here. So we fire her up and start to head about 1 1/2 mi. in the other direction (back towards and past dad's house). As I'm pulling out onto the street, dad looks at the bill board, and says, their regular is only $2.93. Well I'm committed to getting on the main road. So I do. But figure I'll go down 1 block to the traffic light and turn left, and then left again, and head back to the station. As we are decelerating towards the traffic light, she dies. I hit the ignition switch, nothing. Since I'm in the middle of the street, I figure we'll push her across the street, thus making the lst left hand turn and at least be back in dad's neighborhood. Luckily 2 nice fellows offer to help us push her across the street and up the little incline. I check for spark. Nope! Ok. I find a piece of cardboard I had in the glove box, and a screwdriver and adjust the points. Hit the ignition, and she fires! Great!! Now lets, head back towards dad, just in case. We've got about 3 gal of gas in the tank. So off we go. We make it about 3 blocks, and she dies again. No spark. So after playing with the distributor for a while, I say I forgot to bring a volt meter with me. I have 2 in my daily driver. At least I'd brought a small tool box with me! We push the Morgan up the street a couple of 100 feet, into some shade. I tell dad to have a seat, I'll walk the 3/4 ish back to his place and bring my car back. So off I go. About 15 minutes later, I'm back with my car and the voltmeters. I check for 12V at the dist. Nothing! So off comes the dist cap, and I start looking around. The wire that goes from the insulator to the points had broken on me years ago, and I ran a new wire. I thought that had broken, but I'd have 12 V at the input to the dist. Then I notice that the points are closed. Stick the piece of cardboard between them, and I've got 12V. Great! So no I check for continuity on the wire going to the points. It reads open. I figured. But then how was I getting 0 V at the input of the destributor? So I'm thinking that the little insulators for the points have broken down. We kick around some ideas and decide it would be easier to go back to dad's and get his truck and a tow cable and tow the Morgan home. We'd effect the repairs there. continued John T. So we push the Morgan into his garage. He decides it's lunch time and we should run up to the sub shop. Well there just happens to be an AutoZone and a BAP/Geon in the shopping center. So we hit both the autoparts stores looking for point, condenser, rotor button and dist. cap. Neither place has them. So off to the sub shop. I realized some time during this outing that I have a Purtrox ignition system in the back of the Morgan. So after lunch we proceed to install it. This turned into a little more work that I was thinking it would be. First I had to remove the old points set, and condenser. That was easy. Then mount the reluctor plate. It fit perfectly, and uses 2 screw into the original mounting plate were the points fit. Then place their magnet on the dist. shaft, replace the rotor button, and dist. cap. Now is when the fun began. Not really a problem, but just a pain. They had a bullet connector on one of the wires for the reluctor, and an eyelet one the other wire. Well, I needed a female spade to connect to my coil. So I cut off their connector, and got a spade connector crimped and soldered it. Then I had to cut off the bullet connector and replace it with a male spade connector to connect to the female connector that was attached to the coil. Then you have to add 1 wire. I initially used a set of clip leads and got the car running. Then I measured how long a piece of wire I'd need. Cut a piece of wire, and installed female spade connector at one end, and a large eyelet to the other to connect to one of the bolts atf the motor mount, where the main ground strap is. Once the electrical hook up was finished, the car fired right up. So now we park it for another day. One of these days, I may get a chance to get her out on the road. :) I guess I'd better order a set of pionts, condenser, rotor button, dist. cap, and another petrox system. That way not matter what happens I'll be able to fix her on the road next time. :) You all have a great weekend. Bob, Yes, I about died when I found a set of points for $40!!! But I have found some still in the reasonable price range - like around $10. But I haven't bought the yet. So when I do, I may find that they're a lot more than $10. :) I'm having a hard time getting my head around the cost of things, not just car parts. $360 for an alternator for a Honda!? John John T.
