Blair" To: morgans@autox.team.net Date: Thu, 02 Oct 2008 21:47:46 -0400 Subject: [Morgans] Finally Drove her Hey gang, Well, I've finally managed to put about 10 mi. on my Morgan without being towed home. I took her out 2 weeks ago and got about 3/4 of a mile from home and she died. Turns out that the 6mo old gas gummed up the fuel pump valves and she wasn't getting any fuel to the carb. So I filled up the float bowl with fuel and managed to make it back to 1 house away from my dad's where she's stored. Filled up the float bowl again and managed to get her into the garage. The next day, I drained the 3 gal. of old fuel out, cleaned out the fuel lines, carb, and cleaned the pump. Went and bought about 4 gal of new gas, and put it in. Went to fire her up and take her for a ride, getting ready to take her to our local AACA. Now she was backfiring through the carb, and didn't want to start. I went to check the timing. When I pulled the #1 plug to find TDC, I found she had no compression. Pulled the valve cover to find the #1 intake valve was sticking open, and very slowly closing. So I pulled the rocker pedistal, and pluged the compressor into #1 cyl. to hold the valves closed. I removed the valve spring, and squirted some PB blast on the valve stem. I tied a piece of wire to the valve stem so I wouldn't drop the valve, and tapped the valve lightly with a hammer. She went down but without the spring I couldn't get the valve back up. So I carefully pryed the valve back up with a pry bar. Hit the valve stem with some more PB blast and tapped it down, pryed it up. After repeating this several times the valve started to move a little freer. I put the valve spring back on, remounted the rocker pedistal, removed all the spark plugs, set the valve clearence, and spun the engine over on the starter. The valve started working. I reinstalled the plugs and tried to fire her. She didn't want to start. So I started playing with the timing until she fired. Then I put a timing light on it, and got the timing set. I'd replaced the points with a pertronix electronic ignition module last year and never re-set the timing. So Monday a week ago, I managed to take her out for a test run. Drove her around the neighbor hood about 3/4 of a mi. in either direction of my dad's a couple of times. Then actually got on to a real road and went about 2 mi. and back. She'd also had a history of overheating. All seemed well. So today I took her out for a 3 mi., one way, run to lunch with some friends. Made it there and back and she stayed under 95C! So maybe I've got the gremlins out of her finally. Now if I could just find a way to keep the gas from going to pot in a few months. I've tried Stable with no real success. This time I put some Marvel's Mystery Oil in the gas tank. I just really have to drive her more. Hopefully that will happen now! John John T. Blair WA4OHZ email: jblair1948@cox.net Va. So I decided to take it out Sat. (10/11) night to a Cruise in. I keep the Morgan at my dad's house about 20 miles from my house. About 5:30pm I my wife and youngest son to go with me, in my xB. Then my wife was going to follow me, and my son was going to ride in the Morgan with me. The Morgan fired right up and we headed out. I got about 11 miles from my dad, on a busy steet, without many turn offs, and she died. I coasted to next traffic light and stopped in the run lane. Got out and checked for spark. Had it. Went to get the tools about of the back of the xB and realized that I'd put them in my dad's taurus a few days ago and forgot to take them out. So I tried to start the Morgan again, and she fired right up. Got about 1000' and she died again. After a few minutes she fired up and we got off the main street and headed into a neighborhood, where she promptly died again. This time in front of a friend's appartment. So I called him on my cell phone and told him to grab some tools, especially a screwdriver. He said sure, he'd be there in a few minutes. So I kept working my way to the Curise in. Just short of another main street she died again. Now she'd died about 7 times in the last 2 1/2 miles. My buddy finally found us, and had brought his tool box. I dropped the float bowl and found I had not fuel in it. Lucikly I'd ordered a new fuel pump and a rebuild kit for my old one. So I told my wife and son to go back to our house (about 8 mi. away) and get the box that had just arrived off the dining room table and being it back. It's now about 7:30 and just starting to get dark. By the time they get back, is a little after 8pm and is dark. With the help of several flashlights I manage to replace the fuel pump on the car. She fires right up and we make it to the curise in just about as everyone was leaving. I stood around and talked to another friend of mine and left about 8:30. The trip to my place was uneventful. I kept the Morgan here for about 2 weeks and drove it around quite a bit. I'm finally getting my confidence back in her. Now the weather man is predicting rain so I decide I should take her back to dad's and put her in the garage. I head out there about 9am on Thur morning (10/16). As I'm approaching his drive way, she dies, after making the 20 mile drive with no problem. I go to the shop and grab a screw driver, drop the float bowl and there's no gas in the carb. I take dad's puckup and head up to the gas station and get about 4 gal. of gas. The gas gauge was still showing about 1/2 a tank. Pour it into the tank, she fires right up. I drive her out to lunch, with the of the gang I used to work with, and she ran fine. So I'd just run out of gas! Apparently the float had stuck, because now, after the 4 gal. of fuel, she's showing about 1/4 a tank. The weather has turned a little cool and over cast, but I'll have to take her out some more. I just yesterday have been able to drive my +4 after it was taken out by a middle-aged woman in an suv. Also had a high speed miss that I couldn't find (Almost like a governor at anywhere from 3k-4k rpm). After a number of frustrating attempts at a fix, Larry Eckler finally arrived at the cause...one of the composite floats in my Strombergs had begun to fall apart (Ethanol???) and the bits were sticking in the jet. Now fixed (Joe Curto just began making them!), she's running GREAT!! Good luck with the 4/4. There's always a silver lining to these things as I would wager that the +4 was within a couple of years of a new front end and recore for the radiator. Thanks to the 'hittee' her dime covered that as she'd hit me so hard she bent BOTH stub axles, the crossmember (Into which I'd tacked 1" solid cold rolled stock for strength and rigidity...she still bent it!), as well as turning the radiator into a parellelogram! Sorry you weren't able to get down this way, maybe next year? AutumnMog will likely be at Saratoga Springs again, great meet, fun roads, a super auto museum, and much more. The fuel tank, even original, could be larger, but with the joints/muscles/etc. stiffening after a couple of hours, more frequent stops are usually welcome! Safe winter, here's to a fun spring!!
