Introduction

Many people are happy with an off the shelf car. They pay a large chunk of money, or many smaller chunks every month and in return are treated to nice, dependable transportation. Occasionally some manufacturer will provide some models of their wares which are more performance oriented, sporty even. Still, there is nothing quite like a REAL Sports Car.

I will not go into a detailed discussion of what is and what is not a sports car. The simple fact you are reading this points out similarities in our views of the automotive sporting world. A few of the details I will go into are what you can expect from this booklet.

First, it is not a shop manual. It is not really a competition preparation guide. What this work consists of is a collection of facts, figures and some guidelines about what can be done to a six cylinder Triumph motor to increase the power output. At this time, there will be no concerns about the rest of the car. What to do with the extra power is left up to the reader. I won't go into details on chassis development here, leaving that as only a possibility for the future. For now I will limit discussion to things between the flywheel and the radiator.

Assuming one really is interested in doing some of the described work on a car, some of the things you should have on hand before beginning any work at all on the car are listed here.

Manuals
Bentley service manual for appropriate model is highly recommended. Haynes will also do. Don't try to work on the car without one.

Competition Preparation Handbook
Once again, as appropriate for your specific model. These nifty little booklets are somewhat out of date but always popular. Still full of good advice and details of some stuff.

Catalogs
A good selection of catalogs from places like The Roadster Factory, Moss, Victoria British and so on are a great help, perhaps not so much from a performance standpoint as just keeping a car running. An expanded listing of suppliers can be found in appendix A.

Rule Books
If this work is planned for any form of sanctioned racing, pertinant rules for the intended class should be on hand. One certainly wouldn't want to cheat, would one?
