Bob, I always use just a small piece of heat shrink tubing on the  ends.  
Really works good and keeps the elements at bay, etc.  It is  very easy to 
replace if you ever need to.  Just a quick little cut with a  razor knife and you're 
good to do whatever you need.  Just my 2  cents.
