I can quickly attest to Bob's techniques, he's stated below. When I 
redid the
interior of my car several years ago, I put all the handles back on 
without the
springs and have never noticed or missed them. The slick trick of 
scoring the
wire/rod and bending a few times to snap it off are SO easy, even I 
could do
it!
