For clarity in describing parts, I'm referring to page 90 of Bentley's. Fact: The distributor bushing is bottomed out in the block. Fact: It's 1 1/4" from the shoulder of the stock pedestal to its bottom; that's how much space it needs to bottom out on the block. Fact: With the drive gear in place - its slot seated in the oil pump's groove - the distance from the top of the drive gear to the top of the block's shoulder, is 1 1/8". That 1/8" difference prevents the pedestal from sitting flush on the block. We're not talking gasket widths, I'm saying it's 1/8" difference. The position of the oil pump shaft is not moveable. The bushing, drive gear and pedestal are all original. The oil pump is new. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or what the problem is? Maybe someone can measure just the length of the oil pump shaft. If it was 1/8" shorter, there would be no problem. Thank you all for your time. With the distributor gear out you should be able to turn the oil pump tang with a long screwdriver. If not, the oil pump shaft is too tight in the bushing in the block. If your machinist drove the bushing out, chances are they peened over the bushing on one end or both ends. I just had this problem a couple of days ago. Drop the pan and remove the oil pump and try to fit the shaft into the block. It should rotate easily. Same for the distributor drive gear. Once you know those are free it should be easy to drop the gear in. Note that it spins clockwise as it slips in. Good luck! I installed a high torque, gear reduction starter on my E-Type's big V12 and have found it to perform well. A couple of observations: - It's really loud when running. - We had to add shims to back the bendix away from the flywheel as it otherwise sometimes hit the teeth with the engine running! - The starter has an adapter plate, allowing the Japanese unit to mate to the application. In my car's case, the Jaguar V12. That plate has a lot of mounting holes so the starter can be rotated about its longitudinal axis. Doing so allows the installer to orient the drive motor away from the exhaust and it's high heat. So with no direct evidence of fit on the Triumph L6, I just write that the starter orientation is adjustable. With 20:20 hindsight, I would not do this upgrade again. At almost four times the cost of a properly rebuilt Lucas starter, the net gain evaporates, if ever there. I ordered a set of four recently and they cost less than (and were much better than) Coker. The would shave off the branding on the tire and vulcanize a red stripe on the tires. They look very good but they aren't cheap? Have you considered Universal Red Redlines?? It's a tire with modern radial construction, but in the original 185R/15 Size. 185HR15 Universal Sport 3/8" Redline Tire (universaltire.com) Best Regards- John Cyg. CC52927LO 70 Damson
