It could also be tightness in the idler arm on the opposite side to the  
steering box. These need frequent greasing. However, it does sound most likely 
 it is the box.
 
I would go with the suggestion of using lithium grease, instead of oil.  
I've used grease in my SIII box for the past 20 years, and it's still the  
original box and going fine after 48 years.
