SQUIRT YOU IN THE EYE, AND BLOWOUT ON THE ROAD!

This years Run to the Ranch on Aug 23rd, promises to be better than ever, and
Laurie and I are in full swing preparation for it!

Plan to arrive at 1pm, after your lunch, and gather in our 2400 sq. ft. air
conditioned shop for some social time, and at 2pm, we will begin the Tech
session. This years topics are:
The latest tire safety info, how to tell when it`s time for new one`s.
The Healey oiling system, particularly the rocker shaft and bushings, and the
effect on the oil pressure.
At 3pm we will head out on our mini-tour. This year we will get another
spectacular view of the Valley, from the East side of the river high on the
plateau, time for pictures and enjoying.
We will be back in the cool shop for dinner, the August club meeting, dessert
and then the rest of the evening will be open shop time for answers to your
own cars maintenance questions.
Each year we have 35 to 48 Healey friends attend, let`s see if we can break
the 50 mark this year!! We want so many people we have to have a satellite
meeting set up in the paint booth!
Laurie and I personally invite you, with or without your Healey, and
especially if you haven`t been able to make it to a previous one, or are brand
new to the club. Come have a great time with a superior group of people!

Just wondering if the the Healey my kids and I saw on Sunday morning
belonged to anyone in the club.  The driver was in a BJ7 (possibly BJ8)
heading east on US-2 through downtown Leavenworth this past Sunday morning
about 9:30 - 9:45 AM.  You were alone, top down and a ball cap on.  Nice
ride - it's good to see them out on the road.

Hi all,
 
The weather is forecast for a fantastic weekend for top down.  Get em on the
road.  That is what they were made for.
 
A reminder to all. Even if you can not make it for all the weekend events,
Saturday promises to be an adventursome day with Bellingham for lunch and then
down Chuckanut Drive.  I hope you can get our this weekend to join us along
the way even if only for a short part of the trip.  My first lady is getting
famous for her cookies on these outings and if JIm and Arlene do not make it
back in time, they will be safe.  Either way, I hope you can join us for what
ever part you want.  Be sure to let Greg know if you are planning to be at his
place in the evening if you have not already registered to be there.  
 
In case you were not at the last meeting, I will have the July meeting at
Gregs place Saturday evening and I promise to keep it short.  It would help if
any one with new business would send me an e-mail before Saturday.

Don't count on a nice Healey winning a trophy.  I was invited to enter last 
year.  Of the few number of Healeys entered (3), (you must be invited)  the 
worst one was given 2nd place in the class, a 100-4.  The body panel fit was 
so bad that you could see the boot lid sticking up above the rear shroud 
from 20 feet away.  Worst door gaps I've ever seen.  1st place in the 
British class went to a MG TC that you could see daylight thru the door gaps 
when standing on the opposite side of the car.  When we went to the award 
presentation, the chief judge explained the awards were based on the 
historical value of the cars.  The TC was the car that the GI's brought home 
after WW 2, and started the evolution of bringing British sports cars to the 
US.  It appeared that the 100-4 got 2nd because it was the first 
"inexpensive" sports car that could go 100 mph and be raced.

Please don't get me wrong...I enjoyed being there  Great food/drinks for the 
entrants, b'fast, lunch, dinner; all part of the entry!!  I just did not 
understand how the cars would be judged.

Not to throw cold water on hot enthusiasm, but I went on this so-called
"rally" a few years ago and could not have been more disappointed.

First of all, it's a real stretch to call it a "rally" at all.  Actually it
was just a tour-on-your-own.  Essentially we paid $75 (or whatever the entry
fee was), and we got a set of directions to get us from Fife to Hood River. 
They were not even rally instructions and we were not timed.  In fact, if I
recall correctly, the gag was that it was all "scored" based on how closely
you matched the time that the so-called rallymaster had taken to drive the
route.  Big yuks for some, a medium-sized fiasco for those of us who were
expecting some kind legitimate competitive element.

I recall thinking at the time, "I didn't need to pay anyone $75 to take a
Sunday drive."

I was so let down by the whole deal that afterwards I contacted the
"organizer" to offer to write a real rally for those who wanted that the next
year.  They could still have their "tour only" group.  At first he didn't
respond.  After I followed up to ask if he received my *generous* offer, he
made a snide reply about how no one wants that kind of thing.

Your mileage may vary, but my opinion of the event and the organizer should be
obvious.

Pat yourselves on your sweaty backs.....27, yes 27 cars participated in
the CanBeANut Tour to Bellingham, Anacortes, and Greg and Sharon Hill's
cabin on the north end of Whidbey Island!!  26 Healeys and 1 MG. 
Highlights included Jahn and Doris Johnson's first ever club tour on
their Sprite...and a coil replacement en route.  And Lois managed to roll
her car over her foot.  Two of the cars were friends from the BC club.

Bob and Marilyn,

The Sunday lunch group was the same as the Mt Erie group.   I did find a
photo of you that I meant to upload, (it was cropped and ready --- just
missed it) and that has been done.  I think the only one without a
picture is Bob/Dennis (which are you?!) Hughes.  The one I took wasn't
good.  As I wasn't the only one taking pictures, hopefully everyone will
turn in photos and write-ups to Craig and Jean for the Cascade magazine!!

Bruce and  Sue,
I am glad our paths  crossed last month on Whidby Island.  Your car is
beautiful and I was  very glad to see a Healey out there with all of those
other
wonderful  cars.
Most folks donbt  expect to see a Healey at a show where the majority of
entrants are American  made. I hope you took home a nice trophy.
I enclosed a picture  of me and Jane and our 1967 BJ8.  This was taken at the
2007 Eurofest car  show in Spartanburg S.C, at the BMW plant.  Healey was the
featured  marque and Gerry Coker was the guest of honor and keynote speaker.
There  were 110 Healeys of all types in the show, out of a total of 600
European  cars. I was most pleased that we took 2nd place in the BJ7 and BJ8
class
(about 60 cars)  since we drove the car to the show from Arkansas,  about
1800 miles round trip. It took me 4 hours to get all of the bugs off and
clean
the wheels before the show!
Please give my  regards to the folks in the Cascade Club.  I was a member
from 1990 to  1994, then moved back east to North Carolina. I actually
maintained
membership  in the Cascade club for about 10 years.  One of my best memories
is of  our trip to Breckenridge in 1992.  Bob Findley organized the trip and
it  was a hoot. I think we had 13 cars in the caravan and many good stories
resulted from our 10 day trip. Many of the friends I made in the club stayed
in
touch for a long time and a few of the old members may still remember  me.  I
drove a Healey-blue BJ8 in those days but have since restored this  white BJ8
and it is now my primary Healey.  I have since moved to  Arkansas as you can
tell from my address.
Well, I certainly  hope that you continue to enjoy your Healey and stay in
touch if  possible.

for the August 16 meeting at my house for the newsletter.  So I thought I

August 16 meeting in Redmond

The meeting will be at Gary Jackson house at Eagle Crest Resort (588
Widgeon Rd, Redmond OR,  Phone 541-923-9766).  The day will start at
10:30 with a tour led by John Wilson.  We will gather at the Safeway
store in down town Silverton and proceed from there.  Please be filled up
with gas and ready to depart prior to 10:30.   There is a planed stop
along the way for a picnic, so bring a light lunch. You can call John at
541-221-9213 if you have questions. The tour should arrive at Eagle Crest
around 2:00 with the meeting around 3:00 followed by a Mexican Fiesta
with all of the timings.  Lodging has been arranged at the Redmond Inn
Motel (541-548-1091) for August 16 at a Rate of $65.00 +Tax.  Be sure to
say you are with the Austin Healey Group.  Any room not reserved by
August 4 will be released, so be sure to call early.  There will also be
a Sunday brunch, location yet to be determined, before everyone takes off
for home.  So come on over to the sunny side of Oregon for a great
weekend in the sun.

I haven't been to this even in 10 years - actually this was the first event
I did after I bought my Healey.  The venue is different now.  Can anyone
tell me if this event was held at BCC last year too?  I'd like to know what
to expect, grass versus parking lot, shade or sun. etc.  I appreciate any
insight.

Carlo,
It's still held at BCC in the south parking lots 4,6,8, and 10.  The
marques usually gets the better parking lots (read "shade"), with the
others spread out in the remaining areas.  See:

There is a certain amount of grass between the parking lots that can be
utilized for sitting, but bring chairs, tables and whatever else makes
you comfortable.

Hope everyone enjoyed the ABFM yesterday! It was a great day as always.
Here's an update on events & activities:

Saturday Aug 2 
Tour to meet up with the Oregon Club in Centralia at the McMenamins OLYMPIC
CLUB HOTEL & THEATER for lunch.   We will meet at the Starbucks at I-5 exit
#127 at 10:30 and we will Leave at 11:00 for a backroads tour Roy Yelm and
Tenino, with a break at Yelm.  Arriving at Centrailia about 1:15. Lunch,
visit and go home or stay till 5:00Pm and watch a film of the Goodwood
Festival.  You could stay over night but the hotel is booked. More Info?

Annual get together with the Tyee Triumph Club. Tour meets at 1:00 PM at the
new Starbucks on Meridian South and 132nd Street. From SR 167, take Exit 512
to South Hill, go south onto Meridian past the South Hill Mall to 132nd
Street, left at the light to Starbucks. A $5.00 per person charge for food,
bring you own drinks and chairs. Tour will last about 1.5 hours.

Saturday Aug 23rd
This years Run to the Ranch promises to be better than ever, and Laurie and
Steve Day are in full swing preparation for it!

Carlos Cruz has volunteered to serve as our tour leader from Seattle to the
ranch. He will communicate tour plans as the date draws near.

Attendees should plan to arrive at the ranch at 1pm, after your lunch, and
gather in the Day's 2400 sq. ft. air conditioned shop for some social time,
and at 2pm, we will begin the Tech session. This years topics are:

1)The latest tire safety info, how to tell when it's time for new one's.
2)The Healey oiling system, particularly the rocker shaft and bushings,
and the effect on the oil pressure.

At 3pm we will head out on our mini-tour. This year we will get another
spectacular view of the Valley, from the East side of the river high on the
plateau, time for pictures and enjoying.  We will be back in the cool shop
for dinner, the August club meeting, dessert and then the rest of the
evening will be open shop time for answers to your own cars maintenance
questions.

Each year we have 35 to 48 Healey friends attend, let's see if we can break
the 50 mark this year!! We want so many people we have to have a satellite
meeting set up in the paint booth!

Laurie and Steve welcome you with or without your Healey, especially if you
haven't been able to make it to a previous one, or are brand new to the
club. Come have a great time with a superior group of people!

I got this request from the Web page.

"I have a set of Bumpers that are original stock and still new.  I think they
are around the years of 1962 or earlier.  I would like to sell them.   Could
you please e-mail me and let me know if anyone is interested and how can I
tell which year car they are for.  (I have been holding on to them for 18
years, I'm such a packrat!) Thank youSusan Canaday (dragonsc at msn.com)"

I told her I would pass the information along.  Can someone help?  Can some
one use bumpers?
