When the carbs flood it's usually from some grit getting into the float needle opening so the float bowl doesn't stop filling when it should. The needle gets blocked open by some junk. Use a fuel filter before your fuel pump and before your carbs for 100% insurance against this happening. That way any crap from the tank or form the fuel lines will be caught before you have this problem. Rich ps I took the car out for a drive and got it to engage into and disengage from overdrive. When I stopped I could move the car backwards without hangoing up the roller clutch in the overdrive. Seems like I'm getting closer to going to McMinnville. Tomorrow will tell. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ron And Dianne Layton To: neil & lois buhman Cc: Richard and Gretchen Bittmann ; Phil Daniels Sent: Tuesday, September 22, 2009 5:29 PM Subject: McMiinnville Hi Lois, This morning I was going to back the car out of the garage to wash it and had a problem, I turned the key on and the fuel pump wouldn't stop its rapid clicking and it wouldn't start when I tried. I could smell gas and figured it was flooded. When I got out of the car there was a huge puddle of gas on the garage floor. I pushed the car out and cleaned up the gas and then used a trouble light to see where it was coming from. I thought maybe a loose fitting but could see nothing under the bonnet that was wet. I took the spare tire out and opened up the battery lid to see if one of the connections in or out of the fuel pump was loose and they were OK. I turned the key on and peered under the bonnet to see if I could tell where it was coming from. There was a steady stream of fuel coming out of the over flow tube of the rear carb chamber. I called my mechanic and he suggested that I turn the key on and lightly tap the float chamber thinking that the float was stuck and that would stop the clicking-sure enough it did. The car wouldn't start though so I let it sit for 4 hours and finally did get it started. Tomorrow morning I'll drive it to the shop to see if there is a further problem. There could be a small hole in the float and it has filled with gas. if that is the case they should be able to drain it and solder the hole. The result is things are a little up in the air. Baker tour. I am sure it will be fun and a great final tour of the year. As you may all remember, this was Jim's favorite run and keeping that in mind, Do remember to bring your spare everything in your boot, i.e. spare transmission, spare half an engine, at least three fuel pumps and plenty of tools to swap it out on the shoulder of the road. We will be having a tally at the top of the mountain to see who is best prepared and we must have a trophy recycled from a bowling meet or something. See you all on the road this weekend.... Just a sampling as I took 179! Mostly at the aviation and space museums (for you, Craig!), where it was hard to take pictures that don't turn out to be a big jumble! We led three Canadian cars northward Sunday morning (Brian and Carole Drab, Rick and Marti Bjorndahl, Gordy and Billie McGloughlin - sorry for any misspells!) They kept insisting they weren't going to buy gas until they got out of Oregon, due to different filtering specs. Brian got not quite to the top of the Longview bridge over the Columbia River....and ran out of gas! With Brian holding a blanket between cars (then a found styro cooler lid), and Carole steering, Rick was able to nudge with his car until they crested the peak and were able to coast down and off the bridge. In the mean time we, Gordy and Billie, after our first worried puzzlement as to what happened, waited for them at Starbucks, conveniently located a few hundred feet from the end of the bridge. We continued north on 411, and after lunch at Mrs Beesleys near Vader they got on I-5, heading for Port Townsend for the night. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tesla314mom/ See y'all Saturday!
