Subject: Harrowing Naval Aviation videos After some of this the captain had to question his order of flight ops under these conditions. It's always safety vs. training realism. I suppose you don't want to run into a combat situation where weather curtails essential operations due to lack of experienced/capable personnel. This is very unnerving, landing with deck pitching 30 feet, at night, low on fuel. Incredible. You will never forget viewing this. I have seen a lot of aviation emails but the two videos below are undoubtedly the best. Turn on your sound and go full screen. I guarantee this will definitely hold your attention. These videos show the difference between Naval Aviation and any other kind. The links below are two outstanding videos about F-18 carrier operations aboard the USS Nimitz during weather that causes a severely pitching deck, which you can see in the videos. It's more dangerous than most combat missions and the tension in the pilots and crew is very apparent. Watch Part 1 first for introduction and terminology. LANDING TERROR! They eked out an existence on a small farm. Alex would scrounge rusty nails from burnt buildings to repair his roof. He drove a ratty VW Beetle, and when it died, he found another even more ratty, and another...the rusting carcasses littered his yard. Alex died in 1993, and Imogene died in 1996. The local church took up a collection so they could be buried in the churchyard, and the state began the process of taking the farm for taxes. That would have been the end of a sad story, except..... Forget the VW: a '28 Franklin ($4500US) and a '23 HCS($14,500US)lurk inside While preparing the estate for auction, the sheriff discovered a cache of bearer bonds taped to the back of a mirror. That triggered a comprehensive search of the house and outbuildings. The estate auction would eventually be handled by Christies, and it would bring out collectors from all over the world. 1913 Stutz Bearcat went for just $105,000US. Must have been the bad tire. It seems that Alex Miller was a Rutgers grad, son of a wealthy financier. He lived in Montclair, NJ, where he founded Miller's Flying Service in 1930. He operated a gyrocopter (look it up, it's too much of a digression) for mail and delivery service through the 30's. But the Millers had a secret, and they moved from Montclair when they needed room for it. Step behind the wheel of a 1916 Stutz Bearcat. ($155,000 US) Choosing to live low profile, and paranoid about tax collectors, Miller moved to the farm in VT, and took his collections with him. Most of his cash had been exchanged for gold and silver bars and coins, which he buried in various locations around the farm. He carefully disassembled his gyrocopter, and stored it in an old one-room schoolhouse on his property. he then built a couple of dozen sheds and barns out of scrap lumber and recycled nails. In the sheds he put his collection. Have to remember to clean that '20 Bearcat out of the shed. ($50,000 US) Alex Miller had an obsession with cars. Not just any cars, but Stutz cars. Blackhawks, Bearcats, Superbearcats, DV16's and 32's. He had been buying them since the 1920's. When Stutz went out of business, he bought a huge pile of spare parts, which was also carefully stored away in his sheds. A Springfield Rolls Picadilly Roadster ($115,000US). Made in Illinois. Sometimes, he would stray, and buy other "special cars", including Locomobiles, a Stanley, and a Springfield Rolls Royce. He never drove them. He'd simply move them into his storage sheds in the middle of the night, each car wrapped in burlap to protect it from any prying eyes. Over the years, the farm appeared to grow more and more forlorn, even as the collection was growing. A snappy car: 1921 Stutz Bearcat. ($58,000 US) Occasionally he would sell some parts to raise cash. Rather than dipping into his cache, he would labor for hours making copies of the original parts by hand. Stutz factory spares. Cylinders and pistons from a brass era Stutz in forground. Collectors knew him as a sharp trader, who had good merchandise but was prone to cheating. His neighbors had no clue at all, they thought Alex and Imogene were paupers, and often helped out with charity. Wheelbarrow blocks a '28 Stutz Blackhawk Boattail Speedster ($78,000 US) The auction was a three day circus, billed as the "Opening of King Stutz Tomb". It attracted celebrity collectors, as well as thousands of curiosity seekers. The proceeds were in the millions, some items went for far more than their value in the frenzy. In the end, the IRS took a hefty chunk of the cash for back taxes, which proves the old adage about the only two sure things in life... I had reason to talk to them today so I forwarded your question about the pan seat gaskets. For what it's worth, they tell me that they used to install a gasket in this location but they no longer install this gasket on their restorations because the gasket tends to hold moisture and causes rot over the long haul. They feel that properly securing the pan over the edge of the carpet is sufficient to seal out road splash. I have a 100-6 that was restored in Europe. The firm that did the work was not particularly knowledgeable about Healeys and I have found a number of details that were not properly or well done. That said...I decided to take a look at how they re-installed the shroud and have included photos of each side. As you can see (aside from the poor bondo work) is that the shroud is on top of the bracket. I question this, as it seems like the installation would be much better looking if the brackets are less visible. I looked through my Healey restoration guide written by Gary Anderson and Roger Moment (a really good reference in my opinion) On page 41 they state the following "The front shroud was fastened to the front frame rails with two metal brackets, which were attached to the frame rails and to the shroud with 10/32 pan-head Phillips screws." There was no specific illustration that shows this but I did find a photo that illustrates the front bumper attachment. If you look closely, that photo appears to show one of the aforementioned Phillips screws. That tells me that the bracket should be on top of the lip of the shroud. Also, it would certainly be difficult to install Phillips screws from the top in this location! This also tells me that I have found one more thing that the goofs in Europe did incorrectly on my car! All of the above is in the "for what it's worth" department. I hope it helps you make a decision about the way to install your new shroud. You are bidding on a 1966 Austin Healey 3000 MK111 BJ8 and was owned for 33 years by the same family. I purchased this Healey last fall in the bay area of California.I now have a new clear Oregon title on the car. The original color was British Racing Green with black interior. It has had a driver quality paint job sometime in the past and now has chips and scratch`s that have been touched up with a brush. There is a small dent on the drivers door near the front on the swedge line. The paint has good gloss to it and shows well from 20 feet away. The dog leg area of the rear fenders is the first place that will rust and this area at the bottom of the front part of the rear fenders has been patched in the past and would benefit from a better repair. The end of the rocker panel will also rust in this same area and this did and was not repaired. There was a repair on the under side of the right front fender that you can see but only if you are looking up at on a lift. The rest of the body is in nice condition and still has the original floors in good condition. The frame is straight and rust free with the exception of a nickel size hole on the left front outrigger and the right front outrigger is solid but has a big dent in it from hitting something. The frame rails are very straight with no signs of any accidents. The body is in good condition with nice door gaps but whoever repaired the dogleg area made the panel patch a little too flat as it doesn`t match the conture of the door edge as good as they should, a easy repair to make it right. The chrome is decent but the rear bumper is dented near the over riders. The interior is till original with the exception of the installation of a new Moss Mtrs. carpet kit and a new English Walnut burl dash, and new covering on the upper door padded rails. The top is newer and in good condition and the rear window is clear. The convertible boot is original and in nice condition. The vent window handle on the drivers side is missing but they are available from Moss Mtrs. and the fuel gauge is not working right, the car has about 1/2 tank of fresh gas in it but the gauge only shows just below 1/4. The close up picture of the RH dash section looks like theres `s a line in the door, it`s just a reflection . The windshield is the factory original TRIPLEX and is in excellant condition with no scratches. The odometer currently shows 83,735 miles which I believe to be original as there is a service sticker on the LH door from British Automotive Service in Palo Alto dated 5/16/1984 and shows a milage of 82,973. That`s 762 miles in 27 years! It runs like it was and has excellent oil pressure and a compression test showed 155 lbs. on all 6 cylinders. The car drives great, lots of power and the overdrive works like it should and the gears are great. The wheels are the original Dunlop painted 60 spoke and in nice condition. The tires were put on in 2007 but still show the blue line on the tread from new. This is a car that you can enjoy now and maybe do a new paint job in the future. The BJ8`s ride a lot smoother than the earlier cars but has a lot more power rated at 150. The BJ8`s also have the best potential of appreciation in the future of any of the big Healey`s with the exception of factory certified 100M`s or original factory race cars. Cheers from the Southern Branch here in Portland, RT --- On Sun, 4/17/11, d.ranhofer wrote: From: d.ranhofer Subject: Classic Car Show at Seward Park Centennial - 16 July 2011 To: "d.ranhofer" Date: Sunday, April 17, 2011, 8:49 PM The Seward Park Centennial Committee would like to invite your participation in Seward Park's Centennial Celebration that includes a pre-1960 Classic Car Show. 2011 will mark Seattlebs Seward Park centennial, and we plan to celebrate throughout the year! In addition to our Magnificent Forest, Plants, Birds, and Geology, Seward Park has a rich history we will be celebrating.B As Seward Park was away from the developed area of Seattle, the automobile was a significant factor in the Olmsted Brothers plans for the 277 acre park.B To recognize this historical part of the parks history, we are having a display of vehicles representing the decades through 1950. We hope you will join us to highlight this important aspect of our history. The main event will occur on 16 July 2011, which is the day we are planning to include a Classic Car Show.B The automobiles will be displayed on a paved parking area that will be closed to general vehicle traffic.B There is a very large covered picnic shelter and lawn areas where the car clubs can set up displays and have a picnic. We would like to stage the cars in the morning as early as possible.B This will provide an opportunity to stage a sampling of the cars to participate in a parade around the park's Lake Washington shoreline (~ 2.5 miles).B Note that this one time opportunity is on the paved road now normally closed to all vehicular traffic.B After the parade and throughout the day, people's choice voting will take place with prizes for the winners.B Additionally there will be people dressed in period costumes to add to the flavor of the event. We will have a limited area to park trailers and tow vehicles within Seward Park.B I will need to know how many and what the length of the tow vehicles with trailers would be.B As there is only so much space we can use, I do not want to over commit. If you know of other car clubs that might be interested in displaying, please give them my contact information.B We have room for a total of 80 vehicles, targeting those built prior to 1960. Our web page is set up for the event at http://www.sewardparkcentennial.org We are working with local food providers like The Skillet - http://www.skilletstreetfood.comB intending to have three participants.B If your group would like to picnic, I have reserved the very large covered shelter area next to where the cars will be parked. Please let me know how many tables you would like.B We also have use of the field between the restrooms and the covered shelter that can be used to set up a display of your club, etc.B Again, please let me know if you would like to use a portion of the field, and what you would like to use it for. When you picked it up it looked great and worked, but you didn't really know what they did to it. We'll find out at Autosport (autosportseattle.com) where we'll see their machine shop and talk about the skills and tools used to fix our cars. They recently rebuilt Chip Kochel's engine and he's installed it in his BJ7 chassis. We'll probably see it at Autosport where it's ready for the initial start-up.
