I wonder if it's not a case of availability. IIRC, Champions were much
more readily available (at least in north Texas) in the late
'60s/early '70s. These days I find it the reverse, plus NGK were/are
the OEM plug. I remember running Champions in our 510s, even in
Hawaii, in the 70s, but I'd usually run a couple of numbers colder for
autocrossing and what road racing we did. I'd follow the same practice
today, but probably with NGKs .
