Hi Hoon.

Here are a few bits of info on this subject. I have attached a picture for Hoon (I know the rest of you won't receive it.)

1) Pics from Leigh's GM alt conversion on Zippy:

Pete

2) Here is a pic of the alt. mount used on the SP310. If you can get hold of one of these I guess the rest would be fairly easy. Graeme. (picture attached for Hoon only)

3) I have done the GM alt upgrade. Except for a broken bolt on the top for the adjuster, I have had no problems. Steve in MKE actually ran a tap through the type of mount shown in the attached picture and was able to create a sound mount for his gm alt.

Good luck.

=============
Sorry for the newbie question. I've researched around and found information
on the 311 site about this but wanted a little more info.

My alternator has died. I took it into a shop to get it tested and it no
longer charges. I had a problem where the voltage regulator fried. I found
the short and got it fixed and replaced the regulator but found that my car
wasn't charging. Now with the alternator kaput it is a good time to replace
it and upgrade so that I can install a stereo, speakers, and possibly
upgrade my headlights.

So my question is it seems like the GM alternator is the way to go, either
with the GM Delco Remy 10SI or 12SI. However there seems to be a dearth of
choices to go with. I'm looking for the simplest replacement as I am new to
auto electrical work as a whole. What exact alternator do I need to replace
this? If I'm going to upgrade the radio with speakers and eventually upgrade
the lights is an alternator around 60 amps or 90 amps good? Anyone know of
the part number for the alternator? It also sounds like I'll have to modify
my mount to fit the alternator.

My ampere meter was never hooked up so it is currently capped, but I do want
to hook it up. I'm a little confused from reading whether or not I will be
able to use the meter and if I need a 1 or 3 wire alternator.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks oh great wise internets.
