The sender is a negative temperature coefficient device.
That means it is high resistance at low temperature and low resistance 
at high temperature.
So, if it is still functioning, remove the wire from the sender unit and 
you can use an _Ohm meter_ from the sender terminal to engine ground and 
see the resistance changes as per above.
If the sender reads open circuit or extremely high resistance even when 
the engine is warm, is is probably kaput.
Similarly, you can ground the wire that plugs into the sender and with 
the IGN switch ON the temp. gauge should max out.
Further fault finding will depend on what results you get :)
