bMy paint guy said the only issue with old paint is that some of them will
bleed through today's paint formulas.B 

If you do strip it, the key thing is to get it cleaned and primed ASAP because
bare metal will want to start rusting immediately.

My advice is to strip all the original paint off so you can start afresh.
My paint shop wouldn't attempt to build on 50y.o. primer!
