[Roadsters] Rear axle gaskets?

  How important is the thin paper gasket between the brake backing plate
and the rear axle housing?  I managed to tear mine.  Gee, a 40+ year old
gasket tears that easily?  Just wondering if I need to find a new one, or
if a touch of RTV is good enough.  My guess is it is just a dust seal.
  Found out I don't have a can of grease in the garage (or at least one I
can find), so I'm off to my flaps to speand a few more bucks.

  I tore the axle apart about 2 or 3 months ago.  Too long of a time has
passed so now I have to refer back to the parts manual to see how it all
goes back together.  That and fighting through all the spider webs!
