  Charlie, why don't you contact somebody in the Aviation field that 
does this on the control yokes for vintage planes.
You probably can go to the Plane and Pilot website first and or contact 
somebody in the list of advertisers. I know these services exist since I 
have been involved with others doing  GA plane restorations.

  I remember somebody else here on the forum did just that on a 67 1/2 
2-Liter car a few years ago.

  Basically wet sanding and polishing.The shift knob is done that way
