Highlights from the Solvang Show (2/3)
John Baker's 1969 SRL
Several years of intense restoration by John has resulted in one stunning,
concours-level 2000. Finished in Spanish Red with plenty of engine bay
details to drool over. Best part is that it is driven, even with the
Bias-ply tires! Well done, John!

I?ve been using Castrol LMA brake fluid in my vehicles since the 70?s. I just went looking for LMA @ found that Castrol doesn?t make it any more!  What is the current brake fluid for our roadsters?

I?ve been using LMA in all my vehicles but my ?new? car is a 2006.

Wow, thanks for the heads-up!

That was the first DOT 4 rated fluid I started using, probably 30 years
ago, in brakes and clutch hydraulics.

Have to do some research for a successor. I would still avoid
silicone-based fluid for any car that sits a lot. Water will collect and
rust the line.

You are just plain wrong with that comment on silicone based fluids.  It may perhaps be true that if you get water in the line it won?t be absorbed by the brake fluid.  How are you getting water in the line?

 

In fact, dot 3 / 4 is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water.  So actually dot 3 / 4 is actually much more of a culprit.

Environmental moisture finds its way into your car?s hydraulic systems any time the reservoir is uncapped, and who knows how else. I lost clutch function in the ?76 BMW 3.0 Si I used to own because a little bead of water that had collected in the lowest point in the system, which happened to be the clutch slave cylinder, froze?and then, when I pushed in the clutch pedal the first thing in the morning, that little ice chunk tore the seal.

Since I live in dallas a fairly humid climate, and my roadster  has been
driven maybe a few thousand miles in the last decade, I guess my brake lines
are all rusted away.

 

But wait - I drove it last week and it stopped just fine.

 

Here is a quote from Tech 101 brake fluids:  

 

Silicone-based brake systems tend to be more difficult to bleed, but once
this is accomplished, a DOT 5-filled system will resist rust better and last
longer than the other formulations.

To summarize, the best front brake caliper parts selection found online 
was at the following, which was also the most reasonably out-the-door 
priced:

Same calipers and associated parts are also utilized on a couple of

Comprehensive but pricey, even compared to the Datsun Roadster vendors.

To summarize, the best front brake caliper parts selection found online was at the following, which was also the most reasonably out-the-door priced:

It says this is for a 1970. Do you think it would fit my car? Are the middle

I'm looking for a kit that has the rear shelf piece which it looks like this
one does.  

Other kits seem to have a carpet piece for the trunk which I don't really
care about instead of the shelf piece.

 

I'd appreciate any comments and advice.

The Roadster front brake cylinder assembly comes in inner and outer
variations, SAE/DIN and DIN/DIN hose connections. Alternate sources
for the cylinders don't have various configurations (I assume they're
all double SAE). How is this addressed when using alternately sourced
cylinders?

 I've purchased their kits several times. Sometimes they have a sale/coupon for Memorial day, so keep an eye open.
Yes, the kit listed for the 1970 will fit the earlier 66. I've used these kits on two of my 1967,5 cars. One issue I ran into was for the center piece (Trans tunnel) the attached Jute padding is far too thick, You'll just need to use a razor blade to remove the padding .

While at Solvang I saw two roadsters with rear disk brakes.
I heard someone say they were a complete rear-end replacement.
