On Sunday I attended the Morning Motors gathering in Santa Cruz, Ca, hosted
by Driving While Awesome. We had a neat group of cars for the pre-event
morning drive. I was tasked with leading us up HWY 9 to the 84/35
junction at Alice's restaurant. It was a blast piloting the '67 2000.

HWY 9 was amazingly traffic-free, giving me the time of my life working the
roadster through the winding ribbon of newly paved asphalt. Sora felt so
good with the new Bilstein shocks. Even with 10year old 185/70 tires I was
all smiles with each apex.

After the drive I received a few comments worthy of a chuckle:

"*Yeah man, I had a blast--loved watching you hang the back end out goin
gup 9!"*

*"I must say you were wheeling that thing around pretty good"*

*"Maybe you shouldn't try and drift a 50-year old roadster"*

I was actually thinking of the three-on-the-tree, flathead-four 1961 Rambler American that was my big sister?s first car ? the ?White Tornado?. It looked like a Maytag washer on wheels, and was easily outdragged by my older brother's Mac 90-powered go-kart.

Paul,

Not exactly sure what you are trying to do. You can take your current alternator to a parts house & verify if it?s good or not. If it?s bad, the GM one wire is good but there are other smaller Hitachi units that fit better. I?m getting ready to fit a 280z one wire to my engine, probably next week. I can let you know how it fits if you like.

Ok, well I was about 10 years old then, so what did I know. I do remember my dad curing the "white tornado" syndrome by replacing the head gasket with very little fuss, thus my recollection of the flathead configuration. Still no hot-rod.

I did the GM alt per 311s.org when I first got my '66. While cheap and easy, I wouldn't do it again as it's pretty big and looks totally out of place on a roadster engine. If you were nearby, Paul, I'd give it to you.

There are much better options today.

If you don't mind a slightly modern look, the 93mm Denso (see 311s.org TechWiki) is nice and small.

I'm going w/ a later Nissan-style alt w/ IR (search on "14255") on my '67. You still have to modify the alternator bracket (differently than for the GM alt), but it's 50A-60A, slightly larger than the stock alt and doesn't look out of place.

Not exactly sure what you are trying to do. You can take your current alternator to a parts house & verify if it?s good or not. If it?s bad, the GM one wire is good but there are other smaller Hitachi units that fit better. I?m getting ready to fit a 280z one wire to my engine, probably next week. I can let you know how it fits if you like.

Not to nitpick, but the Rambler American always had an inline 6, no 4s. (and optional V8s) 195 CI with both flathead and OHV versions.

arn't all headlight buckets the same?  They all appear to be identical.  I
have a '63 and have not seen any that appeared different.

Maybe I?m thinking of something different, but I consider the headlight ?bucket? to be the metal behind the headlight that holds the headlight to the fender. The chromed surround for the headlight is the trim, surround or escutcheon. Which piece is the OP looking for?

If it?s the bucket, I think I have a couple off a 67.5.

Great question! I?m trying to make the same decision! Whitewalls are hard to find but I?m considering Hankook or Tiger Paw just because that?s about all there is. Leaning towards Hankook. I?m staying with steel wheels for now, 185 or 195-60 or 70. I have lowered the car about an inch, so I?m not sure how it will look. 

Maybe Alvin will chime in, he mentioned going with 70 series tires, I think he?s on this list.

A lot of tires have no direction of installation. If there is no 
rotation arrow telling you which way to mount them, try mounting one 
whitewall out and see how it looks. You can always turn it around. If 
you're doing an engine swap to a flathead, I vote for whitewalls out. 
Don't forget to put? a racoon tail on the antenna.

Generically the bucket is a bezel, a piece of chrome trim.

A lot of tires have no direction of installation. If there is no rotation arrow telling you which way to mount them, try mounting one whitewall out and see how it looks. You can always turn it around. If you're doing an engine swap to a flathead, I vote for whitewalls out. Don't forget to put  a racoon tail on the antenna.

Aesthetically I think?

White walls for stock wheels & hubcaps.

Black walls (or RWL) for anything else.

I bought my white walls at Les Schwab quite a while back, but I don?t think they are available any more. Not a performance tire, but I expect better than stock in ?68.

to us with phh40 Mikuni's but Rob always suggested using 44s. While it made
great power, a switch to 44s, optimized A/F ratio and timing yielded
157hp/151tq at the wheels:

On top of the impressive power, the roadster now has improved driveability.
On a test drive with Rob I was blown away at the power delivery...from an
R16!!! Of course the sounds of the Solexes are hard to beat, enjoy this
