My only problem at the moment is the whole "gotta have a car" thing. :-) How much tread do I need to pass inspection? I have a feeling I'm going to need to buy new front tires for the Saturn before I come down. The back tires have quite a bit of tread on them, but the front tires are starting to ware. Theirs no bald spots on the tires, but the tread is maybe 1/8" to 1/4". I'm guessing that isn't enough. Other than that I think the car will pass inspection. Hopefully the engine will hold togather for us too. My wife has also showed some interest in taking the saturn for a run too. But my guess is that she'll chicken out, and I'll have to kidnap her for a fun run, after that I'll probably never get her off the track. Anyway, I'm babbling, so back to work. There may be no autocrossing up in River City (there was Solo at NIACC once) but there ARE autocrossers. I know of at least a couple in M.C. as well as a few more in the surrounding areas (Forest City, Albert Lea) They have hinted of trying to get a small club organized up there but nothing has developed yet. I have CC'd this email to Scott Smed who is in Mason City and hopefully will give you a shout and get you hooked up to go chase cones. Scott drives a 330ci but cut his teeth on CRX's. He is also involved with open track events if you ever want to play on a big track like Heartland Park Topeka, Midamerica Motorplex, or others in a safe environment. I need to stay with the steel wheels at this time. Why? Are you planning on running these full time or will you be switching at the event sites? You can run any wheel as long as it is the same diameter, width, and +/- .25" offset. What size wheels are they? 14x5? 14x5.5, 14x6? There are a lot of times lately that I think the Sonett is what I should still be driving. "The older I get, the faster I was!" BTW, the visit to Mid Ohio this last weekend was an interesting trip. The most exciting time was Saturday qualifying. Damp/wet track, heavy buildup on the tires, and I have never seen the course (turn 8, 10a and 11 were interesting:-). I never got the buildup worn off the tires! Fun course! 1,370 miles round trip. A quick survey of my old stack of Driftings from the early 70's shows that on a few occasions you would actually beat Sam in your Sonett. Of course Sue Frank usually beat John in their Sonett II also. But now and then John would win too. The site is very good for an autocross and the party Saturday night is a good time to meet new people. As you know, an airport doesn't have a lot of shade so the Easy-Up is a VERY good idea since it will probably be hot. I have even seen Easy-Ups used in grid but that can be problematic if the grid spots are small. Also, bring lots of water. See Y'all Friday.
