I use a PermaCool 16" fan (part #771-19126 from Jegs).  No clearance
problems.

I see no reason why Bob Lang's suggestion of cutting a notch in the x-brace
and boxing it will not work, except that it will be a ton of work to prevent
the brace from warping during welding.
