The shop manual shows a special tool that pulls the rear main straight down.
I made one of these with only a fire ax, drill press, and buzz box.  Cut a
strip of metal from some plate (or use bar stock).  Drill two holes in the ends
and weld nuts over the holes on one side.  Two bolts thread into the nuts.
Drill two smaller holes between the nuts so that the bar stock could be bolted
to the main cap.  Tighten the bolts threaded into the nuts, and the cap can be
easily pulled down and out.

Yes, many times I had plenty of Permatex slopped in my face and hair while
pounding in felt underneath the car while lying on my back.
