A similar thing happened to me as I was returning from the VTR in Dallas a couple of years ago. I was towing my double deck trailer with two Spits on it and the Texas DPS trooper thought I was hauling them commercially. I quick look at all the stuff I had in my tow rig convinced him otherwise.

In 1975, one of my best friends decided to try racing his Spitfire at Sears Point for the first time. It's a fairly long tow from Portland so his "sponsor" loaned him a motorhome for the trip. Coming home, we decided to drive straight through so we could go to work Monday morning. At about 5am, I was driving about 100 miles from home when I was pulled over by a state trooper. The car of course was on an open trailer. He asked to see my commercial permits and of course, I said "what???" Anyway, after looking over the car for about 5 minutes, he let me on my way. Bottom line he was bored at 5am.
