Not to worry Mike, start off with the simple investment in Kas' books and READ
THEM. It takes a lot less time than building an engine again. If you do that
and follow the suggestions you'll have an engine that lasts just fine. I pound
the heck out of my engines and even when it was just my ham-handed efforts
they generally lasted for years. Really, there's just a few big rules to
follow:

Adequate piston clearance
Adequate guide clearance
Keep an eye on your cam followers and the entire valve train--including
springs
Don't get too carried away with compression
If you don't have a steel crank and good rods, keep the RPMs below 5500
Don't overheat the car
