the batteries being mined in South Africa, the ore shipped to a smelter 
in Spain, then
halfway around the world to be formed into sheets, then the sheets 
shipped to Canada
to be made into batteries, which were shipped to Japan and put into cars 
that were
shipped back to North America.  That's a LOT of miles to be covered, 
powered by
petroleum.
