Hello dear Marcel ! Many of us have a great experience with the stock
distributor rebuilt and calibrated by Advanced Dsitributors (Jeff
Schlemmer).
He will make your distributor better than new and reliable too, and will
build into it if you wish an advance curve specific to your engine specs (he
has a data sheet to fill in for that).
Jeff  made a great work for my TR3 (rally prepped) stock distrib, and my
prepped 82 Lotus Esprit (also Lucas distrib).
I am very happy with the work of Jeff and he provided lots of good advice
too (also regarding aftermarket electronic ignitions, that was for the
Esprit as the TR3 runs points very successfully)

I run a stock distributor with a simple Pertronix I unit.

Yesterday I swapped for an identical Mallory distributor, with cap and leads
and no play in the shaft bearing. Also tried a new coil and ran the engine
without alternator : no improvement at all. So I'm looking for another type
of distributor. Any other suggestions to improve the timing?
