I once had an exploded clutch, at 8250 rpm (tacho memory), but this was by
accident : a small piece of aluminium had the Webers jammed with wide open
throttle!
Normally I change gears at 6800 and sometimes at 7000 rpm

To summarize your recent posts, a lot of good advice has been posted, I just
want to share with you what I generally do for clients, keeping in mind that
I insist that the engine speed be kept below 6500rpm, all 87mm.
As I posted, I use the 45D dist. It has advantages including the big cap to
prevent spark-scatter, asymmetrical cam design for points applications,
rugged mechanical advance mechanism etc. It's a good unit, either optical or
magnetic trigger will be fine.
You should be pretty much full mechanical advance at high revs, so the
counterweights will be against the stops so there should be no timing
scatter resultant from the mechanical advance mechanism.
Make sure the breaker plate is not wobbling around, that will give erratic
timing
Also pay VERY close attention to the drive gear end float! I discard the
pedestal gasket and go metal-on-metal and machine the pedestal for minimal
end float, around .002ish seems to work well.
I also generally use new cams nowadays, for whatever that's worth, and I
have no timing issues (so far, probably just jinxed myself!)

What distributors are you guys using for racing the Triumph TR 2-4A engine?

In the Triumph Competition & British GT championship, electronic ignition is

allowed, but the mechanical advance mechanisme has to be retained.

Programmable advance curves are not allowed. In recent years, I'm using the

Mallory Unilite Electronic (#4532001) : no failures but the ignition timing

is far from steady, especially above 5000rpm the timing is very erratic (=

most of the time when racing). I'm looking for
