You certainly can get scattered spark timing with a wobbly distributor, and it can be somewhat consistent. Less common with a magnetic trigger, though still possible. When setting timing on the old /5 BMW motorcycles you put a timing light on the flywheel mark and observed the jitter. Then turn the engine until the points open (one set of points for both coils—wasted spark system), note the marking on the cam, and cive a gentle rap to the cam with a copper rod and mallet. Recheck and see if the jutter got bigger or smaller. Always seemed whacky that something as precise as a beemer boxer motor would be so primitive, but it worked. 

Makes a lot more sense that it was a head gasket leak.
