[Fot] Detroit Locker Question

I found this out the hard way on my TR3 with Southwick conversion (Ford full floating axles). The button was left in by the shop that put the rear end together and the axle bearings were quickly ruined.

Hello John,
You only need to use the button if your running a live axil (TR3 & 4s). You must have the button installed so that you can set the axil bearing load (with shims) when installing the axils. Both the axils will touch the button. The TR6 uses an independent rear end and thus you don't have to set axil bearing loads together, thus no button. Each axil is independent from the other. The rest of the differential/pumpkin is the same.
FYI, I just sent my live axil rear end to the Southwick machine shop to install the ford type HD axils (no bearing adjustment needed anymore) and you don't have to use the button either. You may want to thing about this. Price $1k I can send you a picture of the button and measurements if you want.
Thxs. Steve

Hi,

I'm setting up a 3.70 diff and I had a Detriot Locker kicking around, so I figured I should use it as a posi. In any case, my TR6 axles seem to bottom out in the Detroit Locker. Note: I had to split the locker (which was held together with a couple of bolts) so that I could install the ring gear and wouldn't you know it - there was enough spring tension in device to pop open. So, I had to figure out how to re-assemble it. Maybe I goofed in the re-assembly.

I bought the Locker a long time ago from a guy named Pancho from the west coast. He pulled the part from a Devin Tr3 that he had been vintage racing but he was returning the car to street trim.

The question is: I know that Quaifes have a center "button" that you can leave out or else the TR6 axles bottom - Does the Locker has a similar piece that needs to be there for TR3's but not TR6?

I'd appreciate any advice!!

Right now, I'm pulling one of my Quaifes apart so I can install the 3.70 gear on that, but I'd rather have the diffs all rady to just pop in and NOT have to pull the carrier and pinion if I need a gear change!!
