[Fot] Number of logbooks for your car

At the 2011 Runoffs in the post-race tech line, the scrute pulled a plumb bob out of his pocket and suggested my air dam was wider than the bodywork of my Spitfire. He was looking at the fiberglass hood. Pointed out to him it could not be any further in as it was directly attached to the front valance which, after some 47 years of life, did not precisely line up with the hood, but it was original bodywork – hidden behind the dam but required to be on the car -- while the hood wasn’t OEM. (I’d add the scrute was a friend who was yanking my chain as much as anything. )

Fun story...

I spent untold hours crafting a replacement front spoiler to be told they weren’t legal. The GCR in 1970 certainly provided for it.

Thankfully my period photos from 1972 clearly showed the spoiler on the car.

Fun part is, I didn’t check the old reg until questioned. Measured the dimensions and the spoiler was 1970 legal by the thinnest of margins...sometimes better to be lucky than good...

  Keep the old picture!

The first time I went to tech my GP Spitfire for a vintage organization, they started hassling me about the fender flares.

I pulled out the logbook, with it’s Kodak provided date in the border picture, pointed to the flares, pointed to the date, and we moved on.

    Hi Mike,
My 62 TR4 has logbooks starting from ‘72, and it was a race car starting around ‘65, which corroborates the other suggestions about start date with the log books. Every logbook entry through the 80’s complains about the picture used for the car was out of date- I think Bill Throop had fun with the tech inspectors, using a picture from the car’s first race, with full windshield and barely a roll bar; compared to the car as it sat with full flares and wild paint job.... “update the picture!!” I’m sure Carl, you got a kick out of that too!

        > As for your gap from 1963 through 1971, that may be a function of when SCCA actually started issuing logbooks. You may find that the 1971 logbook that you have is actually the 1st one that was issued for your car even though it was racing before then. You might want to check with someone who handles all the historical info for SVRA about when SCCA started issuing them. SVRA has been super helpful to us and I would think they would know about that or where to direct you to learn more.

I'm missing the original one (1963, never a street car) through 1971. I'm guessing another 3 or 4 books used while the car was in it's prime.
