[Fot] Brake pads

I used EBC Yellow stuff for about 14  years and the TR4 performed quite well with them.

Last year suddenly the performance of the pads faded on both cars, the TR8 and the TR4.

Sometimes the pad fell off the backing plate, on other occasions they disintegrated and it wasn’t possible to stop the car properly.

 

As Pagid is the sponsor of the racing series I talked to them and got pad material for testing.

Some of them are very aggressive, others more dull with braking.

I’ve found out what fits best to my car and I’m happy since then.

The pads are for sure double or triple as expensive than EBC (TR4 pads) but they last about 2  years on my car.

I used EBC Yellowstuff on recommendation of another racer but my experience was awful.  I followed my usual break-in procedure (progressively harder stops to get some heat in the pads and rotors, followed by a long run to cool the brakes) but during a subsequent race the pads felt like they were glazed.  I tried sanding them and the material came away in chunks.  I chanced it again but the brakes were not effective after the first few applications, and again I tried to sand them with the same results — the material crumbled.

 

If the attached picture can be viewed on this forum, you can see what happened when I poked the material with a small flat-bladed screwdriver.

We have been experimenting with some different pad compounds.  We have not had issues with pads from Carbotech or Hawk.  Both companies have been very helpful and delivered good product to us.

Additionally, we just had an excellent experience with a Porterfield on an order.

On the other hand, we have come to find that there is someone in the US that represents their rear brake shoe linings as being good for racing.  We tried it and in one session we knew it was not a compound made to work at race temperatures.  Therefore, we went around the seller and we tracked down the company doing the relining for the seller .  The shop owner was really nice on the phone and they have confirmed what we thought in a test.  The lining that is being used is NOT FOR RACING PURPOSES.  It is a Cool-stop lining designed for street car use only.  The compound that is being misrepresented is made to work well at low temps.  That was a disappointing waste of $150 and a brake job……We ran them one weekend took them off.  Now the backing plates will now be sent for a proper race lining.

Here are two different sets of CarboTech pads. Same part number.
You can see that the backing plate is ground down and the pad is shaped at the same time. Other detail differences are also evident. The edge of the pad was contacting the caliper slot.  Pretty sloppy construction.
