[Fot] laycock clutch question

If you're using a clutch PP from XXX, and a custom racing disc from YYY, those are the "correct" parts. If you're using a complete off-the-shelf clutch kit, there should be absolutely no adjustment/shimming required.Realize also that we're not "spacing" the PP out any distance, the most I've had to do is shim under .030, usually considerably less. The PP is just a big bellville washer that compresses axially with increasing pressure produced (clamping force) as it's compressed, up until the overcenter point, and the pivot points which determine the arm length ratio result in little travel in the plate (ie shimming it) and a lot on the TO bearing contact end.
In other words the shim required is usually pretty thin, it's almost a matter of fine-tuning a given combination, not to correct another problem...

Glen
If I was in a moment of desperation and that is all I had, I would consider using spacers under the PP, but I think it is better to get the correct parts.

not at the desperation point yet, but getting there! Laundry list is getting longer instead of shorter!

I’m trying to think of a time when I was at this stage of putting the car back together and it HADN’T reached a “moment of desperation”  :-)    With my Spit, I raced a pretty heavy schedule.  Running with both VSCDA and Midwestern Council, I could do 10-15 races a year back in the day.  So I was almost CONSTANTLY in thrash mode between April and November.  Which might explain some of my more interesting mechanical failures.    Scott (B.)     From: John Styduhar <johnstydo at gmail.com>

I’m curious about Glen’s comment on shimming the pressure plate.  I’ve done that in this situation, using small thin hardened washers.  Seemed to work fine, but that was a seat of the pants gotta-load-this-thing-tomorrow-and-go-racing sort of fix.  Anyone think that solution is a disaster in the making?   Scott (B.)   From: Fot <fot-bounces at autox.team.net>On Behalf Of Phil Gott via Fot

Subject: Re: [Fot] laycock clutch question   Marcel, Brian; I agree with Marcel’s last email. If the fingers point inward, your clutch disc is too thick, indicating that the disc and Pressure Plate are incompatible. Best solution is to get a thinner disc or a compatible PP. Hope this clears up any confusion. Phil Sent from my iPhone

So we don't agree; maybe, if the fingers end up flat after tightening, it still can be normal, but if they are pointing inwards a bit, it is not correct. You can made a decision by measuring how much the fingers are moving inward when tightening the bolts : if it is more than 3 mm it is not correct and the feel in the clutch pedal won't be normal eather. Onderwerp: Re: [Fot] laycock clutch question   Brian; All perfectly normal. Just be sure that the throwout bearing is compatible with the “fingers.” If the fingers are straight the throwout bearing face should be rounded. If the fingers have a crook in them (bent) then the throwout bearing face should be flat. Enjoy your new clutch! Phil Gott Sent from my iPhone

Hey Friends   just installed a new to me (rebuilt) laycock PP and a new clutch disc. As I tightened the PP the fingers ended up pretty much flat across, no longer peaked. So when the hydraulics is engaged the throw out will press the clutch fingers deflecting inward (invert from when on the bench). Makes me uncomfortable / doesn't seem right.    Normal / Correct?    am hoping to put the trans back in tomorrow afternoon, comments please   Thanks Brian   26A GT6+ Brian Schirano
