Going to have to revise my original post. Upon closer examination of the 57 frame I do not see enough red paint to say it was all red. More rust dirt and nasty grease than red Will know more when the body comes off the frame. Original car unrestored. Jim

Could be just excess paint crossed shared?

In the back of my mind is story that frames sat surfaced rusted up outdoors in stacks awaiting use?

I have been researching this rare  event were frames werepainted colors other than black on TR3's since the early 1970's. Ihave personally covered this subject with Alice Dicks, HenryWebster and Ken Richardson they all confirmed, even with letters tome, that all the frames were painted chassis black. Over the years I have confirmed that there werevery rare cases of frames being painted with body colored paint (Powder Blue, Signal Red, BRG the three colors I have documented, now with this thread have Sebring White and Pale Yellow added tothe list). They are found on later TR3A cars for the most part (the 57 listed below is the earliest one I know of). One otherstrange thing is that the frames that were painted with body paintwere not used on a matching body color car. Black Cars with PowderBlue or Red frames, BRG with Red, Red with Powder Blue, etc. Notexactly color coordinated, why they did not match them up isunknown. Why they painted them with body paint is also unknown, asthe frames came in from a seperate plant area painted and ready forassembly. The bodies came in from Mulliners completely assembledand painted. So the two assemblies were never painted in the sameassembly plant?
The above was documented from original owner cars, highly original cars that had fully documented history and originalcars that when separating the body from the frame for the firsttime, found original paint on the top side of the frame, untouchedfrom the factory. If you are restoring a car in this categorydocument your findings for future reference is highlyrecommended.
I do not think that all of them came about becauseof show or race car use, but was done on ordinary cars duringassembly. Off and on from 1957 thru 1960, not just one time periodor batch.
It did happen, how many, for what reason or why islost in history.
All the Best,
Bill RedingerVTR

When we were setting up originality guidelines forTRA there was input of random differences in frame color. some werepositive finds. I personally took it as what ever was in the paintgun at the time the frame was posted for paint went on it .predominately they were Black

Hi all
Motor show cars sometimes had white chassis - I cam acrossthis she looking at the records at BMIHR Gaydon when I startedbuilding the 1958 Earls Court demonstrator (3a) registered2SMC.
Cars had three ‘standards’ of prep it seems and the recordsshow ‘A/A’, ‘A/B’, ‘A/C’ etc but no one seems to know what thatreally meant. I surmised that it might be rolling chassis, displaycar and demonstrator car for test use just by looking at the 57 and58 records and the cars pictured and my car, which had nice chromebits everywhere but was also clearly nicely prepped at one time.Other at Earls Court that year were two shiny white 3a’s and awhite rolling chassis. The red Glasgow and Geneva car Registered3SMC looks to have a white chassis from the period B&W pics.Could be all wrong of course.
The other white chassis cars were from the competitionsdepartment who tended to paint some Chassis white (not all by anymeans) so that cracks could be seen easily. This flowed into theTR4 programme, where each of the four cars alway ran on whitechassis frames and still do today.
Hope this is usefulTony

But I suspect white slipped through once in awhile because ofdisplay chassis, etc.

I encountered it when I was involved in a concours.
