VDCA put on a stellar show, we ran on schedule all weekend and the weekend was dry and for the most part sunny. I finally got my act together and finished all the changes I was planning on Old Blue, the ex-Bill Dentinger 1956 TR3, and dragged it down south to play. When Tony Drews gets to doing his magic with his in-car videos, you will see the fruits of my labor. I took a pretty good handling TR3 and transformed it into a monster! That did not deter me, I kept trying and found the grass 4 times, right in front of Tony twice! As our dear friend uncle jack used to say, I am engineering myself to the back of the pack. Tried a Greg Solow cam for the first time, very impressive indeed! Thanks Greg! Great to spend time with everyone, old friends and new. Can't wait to work out the kinks with the TR3 and try again. Blowing out the bottom of the intake gaskets means you didn't get nearly enough pressure (if any) from that pesky lower mounting stud and clamp. I have found if you use anything other than a stock intake manifold and stock exhaust manifold, you must scrutinize the area where the clamps will sit to ensure the height is very similar. Or, modify the clamps by welding on something to make sure when the clamp rests on the appropriate bits of the intake and exhaust manifold, when the nut is tightened it puts equal pressure on both manifolds. Obviously, the mounting face on each manifold needs to be flat. Assuming you have everything in order, there is no reason a stock manifold gasket will not work, I have run them when I could not get my hands on the HD gaskets and they worked fine for me. Last thought, the nuts that hold the manifolds on are notorious for loosening up in time, and especially after the first few heat cycles. And with everything installed, getting to the two bottom nuts can be a pain. But, failure to keep them properly torqued leads to blown out gaskets. The choices they make in the classification compared to other cars (in the same class) favor the GT6. Why? Because SVRA references the 1967 SCCA regulations for class approval for group 3. Original SCCA classification had the GT6 in E production where it was particularly dominate. Not many cars were prepared for National SCCA competition in the first few years of the new 6 cylinder beast. (Like less than 10 quality SCCA cars until the 1969 season). At the end of 1969 and after a banner year of regional and national wins, the car was reclassified after the ARRC at Daytona. So for the start of the 1970 season- and ever after, the GT6 was in D production. With the most general sense of reason, and for the sake of a true and accurate Base for ?Period Correct classification??. the Triumph GT6 is a D production car and it should run prepared to at or about the 1972 SCCA rules as such. Most importantly; with a stock appearing manifold with no more than 2 throats. Stromberg or S.U. 1.5 ? to 1.75? To Jason Sukey?s point out? no penalty for an enlarged size of a dual carb set-up. The only exception would be the Dolan?s group 44 car which actually ran in GTU under IMSA rules at the hand of the Great Ted Schumacher! And, with every trick thrown at it; It?s simply a bump in class. Intake Manifold modification, and or extra carbs. = C Production Lots of other mods = C production IMSA GTU type GT6= C prod. A modern E production SCCA well built car like Anthony Parker?s = C production. For the record, I don?t care what type of GT6 you build or race. I love them all. But if we are to be fair to the original cars, certain modifications should be evaluated. I see 2 types of GT6 race cars that I?d like to campaign . 1) almost period correct = DP 2) unlimited =CP. The pre-made ones have holes for the intakes that are - to me - too large for the narrow sealing surface of my weber cannon manifold.? I buy uncut material from them and then cut to size using a sharp knife.? That way the intake holes are exactly the same ID as the holes in the head and I get max sealing surface.? I think they are fine for stock intake manifolds. I asked them about making ones with smaller holes and they were willing to do that if I paid the tooling costs (which weren't horrible).? I declined and just make my own gaskets. I am a big fan of their gaskets.? They are not reusable generally if you care about that (I don't). If you look at the picture shared of the blown out gasket you can see that the lower flange of the intake manifold had very little overlap with the gasket. Message-ID: On April 11th, 1991, team.net became a new domain. 34 years ago, how time flies! Back then it was just two lists, autox and british-cars. My, things have changed. At its peak, there were 77 lists, I think, stemming from splitting the british-cars list into Triumph, MG, Healey, etc lists. And shop-talk and the-local and Datsun roadsters and Bricklin and ... you get the idea. Of course, this list didn't come into existence until December of '94. While Team Net is no longer the only show in town as it was back in the early days, there are still just over 30 lists. About half a dozen of these see daily, or almost daily, traffic. Some see hardly any use at all. Back in the mid nineties, the autox list would see like a thousand messages in August, leading up to the Nationals. I think the one and only year I attended, '97, about 2/3rds of the entrants were on Team Net. Lost track of how many stickers I sold. Still have a few somewhere in my office. As I recall, the very first server I set up at home was top of the line, with a 120 MHz processor. Attached is the label for that box. Cost me $2,500. See the photo for the specs :-) Actually, it didn't cost ME much money. Before Team Net came about, I had a fundraiser. Back then, having an internet connection at home was not cheap. I think I raised like $3,000 which got us started down this trail. Still accepting donations, though the semi-annual fund drives are a thing of the past. When folks see fit and have a few bucks to spare, they visit http://www.team.net/donate.html - donate early, donate often! Yep, it has been over 3 decades I have been doing this, a lot of effort. Back in the day it would take me at least 10 - 15 hours a week dealing with errors, bounced mail, maintaining some of the web pages and so on. All that effort did land me a berth in the British Sports Car Hall of Fame. That was nice. And I plan on keeping it going as long as I am physically able. About 10 early 50's cars, mostly "specials" as was the norm in the West when the Torrey Pines road racing started. We're working on how to accommodate these cars, our War Era, pre and post-war classes, plus anticipated new entries (the 1950 Cunningham Cadillacs, both "Le Monstre" and "Petit Pataud"), and the appropriate cars from Group 3 and Group 6. More on this in a couple of weeks. Kastner Cup for Triumphs. 28 cars entered at this time. Also working tent in B Paddock for the Friends of Triumph and a static display of unusual and special Triumphs that aren't racing in A Paddock. Formula Junior will have a dedicated group and paddock area. Toyo Historic World Challenge. We are going to do more frequent and timelier (and briefer) newsletters like this going forward. In a couple of weeks, we'll cover Toyo Historic World Challenge, Ragtime Racers, the Competitors Dinner, and the Paddock displays (at least 6), plus a few fun surprises. Sunday Concours. In conjunction with the Kastner Cup racing events, this year's Concours will showcase Triumphs in prewar, postwar, and competition form. It will also honor Ferrari's iconic V-12 GTs, including a rare 250 GT Berlinetta SWB, and pay tribute to influential design legend Giorgetto Giugiaro. Additional highlights include the timeless elegance of Stutz, classic Porsche 356s, and the 120th anniversary of Rolls-Royce. Other classes will celebrate Chrysler's Hemi-powered heritage, the inventive spirit of early postwar American sports cars, and our ever-popular Preservation class.
