My TR8 is running on Mustang axles. They are quite similar to the Southwick system. I have heard that the securing ring on the axle which keeps the bearing in place can be pressed or I have "heard" they need to be shrinked on. Making the ring red hot and slide it on the axle shaft in place. What is right? Pressing on - which would be easy, or shrinking, what I didn't do before. The reason I'm asking, the bearings don't stay in place and the shaft moves in the bearing. The securing ring is not strong enough. Normally it is no problem, but Lausitzring is an anti clockwise track which made the left axle moving. The right axle is doing well. I suppose the fit is tighter than on the left side. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <700d8b73a7e2d824a8d7408cb50ce0df@tr4racer.com> Apologies for getting waived off, but we have made it around the track and they have thrown the green flag this time! Registration is open (and pretty much correct) for the 2026 VARAC Vintage Grand Prix, home of the 24th running for the Kastner Cup! They run things a little different up in Canada, so bear with me here. Click the link to the motorsportsreg registration page. --> www.msreg.com/2026-VARAC-VGP Fill out as you normally do, and when you come to 1st Car Entry, you will be choosing either Group 1, 2A, 2B, or Group 3. Group 1 is for cars that will run lap times under 1:45. Group 2A is for cars that will run from 1:45 to 1:47.5 Group 2B is for cars that will run from 1:47.5 to 1:50 Group 3 is for cars that will run lap times over 1:50 So, how do you know what your lap time will be at a track you never ran? Great question! My best advice would be to not be too ambitious, it will be easy to move into the faster group, but might take a little more explaining to move into a slower group! The good news is everyone who has not raced on Mosport is required to run test day on Thursday, so you will have some idea before the first qualifying session where you belong. But for the sake of registering, here's my take. To turn a good lap at Mosport, you need to be comfortable with maintaining high speed in corners. I'll post some good in-car video for folks to see what I am talking about. You only brake hard for turn 5, and brake moderately hard for turn 3. The rest of the corners are either no brakes or a confidence brush. Keep that in mind as you choose your group! If you are one of the faster racers, you know who you are, select Group 1. For reference, if you qualified top 10 at Lime Rock this year, you will most probably end up in Group 1. A well driven TR4 or GT6, Group 2A with the likelihood of getting bumped to Group 1 A well driven TR3, Group 2B As our Spitfires range from uber-fast to normal fast, they are going to fall all over the place. Tim Slater comes every year with his 1147 Spitfire and drives the wheels off it turning 1:50's, while I have no doubt the Darrow brothers will be in Group 1. Drivers who can remember removing their rookie stripes, think Group 3. In all probability, the track will be like no other you have experienced, it feels incredibly fast with blind turns and massive elevation changes. Once you have gotten past the 1st Car entry, the next thing you need to select is Kastner Cup. Make sure the car choice is correct. Then you will select the MG/TR Challenge. For class, chose Triumph in MG/TR Challenge. At the bottom of the page you might see an entry for the Rudy Bartling Special Race. My conversations with VARAC led me to believe this race is not being held this year, but it was there when I registered, and I signed up for it. Feel free to do so, but it might just not be happening! We will get a $100 discount for signing up before December 31, so please take advantage of the discount! Thanks everybody! I was looking for a scuttle panel/top plate as I am rebuilding my "project" TR6. As most are aware, this part is NLA, and only available on a "made on order" basis from British Motor Heritage through Moss Motors for about $1,200. And, there is no guarantee of fit. I tripped across a post on Triumph Experience about Steve Choquette, based in Erin, Ontario CA (outside Mississauga). https://www.triumphexp.com/forum/buy-sell-and-trade-forum.5/triumph-body-shells-frames-wings-tr-2-3-4.1920268/ Steve had a parts car and believed he could cut it off for me to use. This was no easy job as the scuttle panel is spot welded onto the body of the TR4, 250 and 6. So, with a GREAT amount of effort, Steve cut this part off the TR parts car, cleaned the underside and treated the part with rust converter. He also left the tacked spots so I a could see the reattachment points and where it would need to be grinded through. This took far more work, time and effort than Steve expected. He was gracious, kept me updated throughout the process and let me know when he actually shipped it. I received the part in less than a week after Steve shipped it. Steve was not done. He wanted to make sure I knew what it might require to attached this part onto my TR6. His phone lines went down (due to cable theft), so he emailed me a detailed explanation on attaching the part. Steve Choquette's contact information is below. Steve will respond to emails, but prefers phone calls with more difficult parts and to ensure the exact requirements. I communicated with Moss and others in order to just replace the rack. I did not want a complete conversion kit. The conversion kit in the car was a pre-2010 product installed by Racetorations. The new kits are completely different. I found that Bastuck in Germany sells a kit that is exactly like the original, pre-2010 kit, with heavy steel brackets on each side instead of a one piece light gauge steel bracket in the new kit. The Bastuck rack is a nice part and perfectly fit the old mounting brackets. I discovered that their u-joints and steering shaft were also needed for a direct bolt-in, because the size of the pinion housing is larger, so a shorter u-joint and shaft assembly was needed. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <974019067.841823.1764020469082@mail.yahoo.com> Hi, I'll toss in some 411 on this topic. At the 2021 VRG Pitt Race, or maybe it was the 2022 Kastner Cup, Tivvy expressed "real concern" about my steering rack. There was a lot of play at the passenger side inner steering tie rod. So Ned and I drove the car back to the paddock for a look-see. Turns out the passenger side plastic bushing had turned into 3 or 4 pieces that were floating around in the steering boot. We pulled out the pieces and verified that they could be formed into a complete bushing so we knew there was nothing floating in there that could cause the steering to bind and went back to chat with Tivvy. He gave us a pass under the prevision that we'd replace the rack before Watkins Glen (which we did). So, in taking apart the unit completely, I can say the following: The quick racks are pretty fun for the street and autox. That said, they suck for racing. There is NO WAY to rebuild them. They are permanently joined inside the rack in other words, you can fix anything with shims and the plastic bushing fails somewhat easily and you can't get the rack apart to install a replacement bushing, even if such a part was available. If I was really convinced that a new rack was the only choice, I would engineer a replacement bushing that could be installed without removing the rack, but that possibility is way outside my skill set. There was also reports a long time ago about the tubes pulling apart from the pinion housing and Moss used to sell (I haven't checked for a while) a rack mount that "captured" the housing in such a way as to allow partial steering control if that separation occurred. My conclusion - used racks are still available as-are the inner tie rods and bushings / shims to set the end float to spec, so I strongly recommend that route. Sidebar: I use plastic tie wraps to secure the boots rather than the clamps and/'or wire tie that the stock setup uses and rather than filling the rack with oil, I grease the pinion and then apply a dallop of grease on the inner tie rod end once a year or so. The racks seem to last quite long using that method. I hope this helps. With the post 2010 updated TR3 kit, the rack is mounted by the rack tube to a bracket spanning between the frame members with u-bolts similar to TR4-6. The pinion housing is not supported, only the tube. The earlier, pre-2010 Moss TR3 conversion kit as well as Bastucks new kits, used individual brackets with the pinion housing being clamped on one side and the end of the tube on the other side. This design secures the housing to tube connection and doesn't allow the parts to separate. Moss sells a rack safety securing kit, but it is only supposed to prevent complete separation and total loss of steering. I haven't looked at the TR6 unit that Bastuck sells, but the TR3 part seems to be a quality item, compared to the others I have recently held in my hands from Moss. Much better. Even the Bastuck rack was not expensive, ~$200. Communicating with Bastuck was not easy. With Black Friday sales on tap, does anyone know if they'll be allowing SA2015 helmets in Canada next year? In the US, every group I've spoken to is grandfathering them in through 2026. In 2027, I'll need a new one, just wondering if I need to do it sooner. SVRA is allowing the SA2015 helmets through 2026. Will NJ, who I know follows the exact expiration dates on belts, require SA2020 or newer? It's been a few years since we raced in NJ and I don't remember back how the SA2010 -> SA2015 transition year worked. I thought helmets were different, it's a design spec, without an expiration date. Our initial discussions with SVRA over tech rules (Phil Gott, chime in here if I'm wrong) would allow SA2015 through 2026. Better to find out now than in line at tech. thanks mike On Thu, Nov 27, 2025 at 6:08?PM Scott Janzen wrote: > Not in New Jersey at MJMP. > > > > > > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm seeking a street "series 1" Gt6 to restore. Criteria: - early car with the bullet tail lights - minimal rust (floor panels rusty is fine...they are going to get replaced anyways!) - not cut up in frame or flared in body panels. - doesn't need to run or drive but needs to have a motor that rotates - ideally with an "intact interior". I'm going to replace it all, but having never owned a street Gt6...I'd love to start with one that has some semblance of a sort-of-complete interior in place. - anywhere USA or Canada - cheap is good but under $10,000 is my ceiling. Send photos or links or whatever you have to bdolan1776 at gmail.com or to my cell if you have a lead! Thank you!
