We will line up in the false grid as directed by the grid workers, when directed we will proceed to pit lane and stop in formation. The photos will be taken, and at the appropriate time we will be directed on track and run our final race of the weekend for the Kastner Cup! Be prepared to proceed to the false grid by 1:10. We expect to be directed to the pit lane immediately after the Ragtime Racers clear the track from their lunchtime exhibition laps strapped in, helmuts on. We have a short window to get the photos taken during the opening ceremonies. The Kastner Cup Awards Ceremony will take place at 3:00, 50 minutes after we come in, at Triumph Central, under the tent by the Team Alexander paddock. Please pass this information on fellow competitors! If anything changes, we will get the information out as soon as possible! I've been chasing tire pressure issues all year and got it together for the Cup race. Honestly, I was shocked that going softer with my rear bar would make a 1 second decrease in lap times, I didn't expect the race to last 18 laps, so that was super kool because there was a lot of traffic as the leaders caught up with the slower cars. I'm pretty sure I mentioned to the list how much time you can lose at Lime Rock with bad corner exit speed and you can see it in the lap times. In any case, I'm super stoked that I got back to my "normal" Lime Rock lap times after my Thompson crash last year. I'm also pretty stoked that as-of 10 days prior to the cup, my car had no driveline installed, a motor in pieces and a number of bits and bobs needed to get to the track. As Henry knows, I was in serious doubt that I'd make it with 2 weeks to go, but there you have it. But the best part was hanging out with a bunch of Triumph folks and seeing some of the more recent "members" of the FOT really get the cars dialed in. Super kool! I also tried my darndest to get some younger folks interested in Triumphs by handing out 30 Hot Wheels TR6's. Speaking of that, it was really kool to see Dave Riddle and Todd Redmond getting kids (young and old!) to sit in the race cars for pix, etc during the Sunday in the Park - WELL DONE. Sidebar to the Spitfire crowd - if you track down the ex Kent Bain car for the asking price - GET THE SETUP NOTES. I know that car does 1:03's at Lime Rock because I timed him a couple of times because I could not believe how fast it was. But that car is a STEAL at the asking price. Vintage Racing Services. 'Nuf said.Pretty sure those guys just tap the brakes to enter Big Bend and nowhere else. Sorry about getting crossed up in the left hander in the opening lap, I think I was freaking out that I had jumped to 4th! That said, it seems the new motor is putting out some ponies. It looks like the Lime Rock marketing machine will be do us proud, I look forward to see what becomes of all the work still going on behind the scenes. Speaking of marketing, hats off to Shawn Frank for all his work for us, what a valuable member of our team. Thanks Shawn! I want to thank everyone who came and supported the event. Racers, crew, and friends. Putting on a Kastner Cup takes teamwork, and while I might have been the seen as the guy pulling the strings, every one of you who was there, even in spirit only, were important to cause. You folks make it all work, as we know a club without active members isn't worth all that much. For me, one of the coolest parts of any KCup weekend is getting to meet and spend some time with our FOT brethren. This event gave us ample opportunity to really get to know some of our racing friends, and I hope everybody took full advantage. We had been planning on doing the awards ceremony at Triumph Central, under the tent by the Alexander paddock. We had 50 minutes from parking our cars after the race to start the presentation. I was informed the track wanted to do the presentation down in the A paddock at the winner's circle with about a half hour to go, and Skip Barber would be attending! So our team springs into action, circulates the word around the paddock (sorry to the folks who didn't get word in time), our stuff gets loaded into cars and shuttled down. I gather my thoughts, get cleaned up and ready for the presentation, find the winners circle with maybe 10 minutes to go. I get introduced to Skip, we are figuring out how this is all going to work, then I hear someone say David Hobbs is here. I turn to see David getting out of his golf cart, he walks over, we are introduced and he asks me "what do you want me to do?" I had known he was going to be there for maybe 30 seconds at that point! The notes I had jotted down for how the ceremony was to flow at this point are pretty meaningless, and it was time to wing it. Hopefully it didn't come off as haphazard as it seemed in my head! But heck, I got to introduce David Hobbs, that will probably be the highlight of my racing career! To recap the awards recipients: Kastner Cup - Dave Gott, TR4 Amici Award - Jason Ostrowsky Performance Award - TR2-3 - Joe Boruch Performance Award - TR4 - Tony Drews Performance Award - TR250-6 - Henry Frye Performance Award - TR7-8 - Tim Cook Performance Award - GT6 - Alex Amys Performance Award - Spitfire - David Gussack (KCup race winner) Performance Award - Triumph Powered Special - Vic Schuster Sponsor Award - Western Pennsylvania Triumphs Association Sponsor Award - GoodParts Sponsor Award - Alexander Racing Equipment Honored Guest - David Hobbs One of the event sponsors is Autodromo, and they present a fine watch to a participant from each group that embodies the spirit of the event. I was told the guy who does the presentation for Autodromo was on track at the moment, so I was asked to do the deed. While I don't think I had their spiel down all that well, I was proud to present the watch to my new racing buddy, Alex Amys! I had to be reminded to announce the location of the next Kastner Cup, silly me as I am going to do this all again for next year. We are going to Mosport, currently known as the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. The home of the very first Kastner Cup. So mark your calendars for Father's Day weekend, 2026, ensure your passport is up to date, and stay tuned for more details as they become available! Also, it was hard not to notice I was hobbling around wearing a back brace all weekend. At the track for the test day on Tuesday I did something my back didn't like and for a while there I was thinking I could not race. It took a village to keep me in the game, thanks to everyone who helped me physically so I would make it out and be part of the show. My time on-track was awesome, thanks to Bob Lang and Alex Amys for some great dicing and encouragement to finally turn some laps down in the 1:04's. I beat my best lap from last year by .185 seconds! Again, thanks to everyone who participated. Job well done, looking forward to Mosport next year! I wanted to get info on the tires as I want to test on them and make adjustments to the car(s) to accommodate the change. It appears the TDR is a good predictable tire and would not require too much change on my car from slicks. May need to play with rear camber a little bit. Excited to try them out. However, the R888R tends to get loose and greasy when hot, 2/3 of the way through a race in the summer, where the Speedster holds up better for the duration. Speedsters wear faster, and cost more. Toyos wear like iron, but after 10-12 heat cycles they are not as good. I used to have the Toyos shaved, no need to do that with the Speedsters. Just my 2 cents - running 205/60-13s on the GT6. Can?t find good info on the R7 compound. Someone could call Hoosier and ask. TDRs are a bias ply tire and don?t like negative camber (according to the Hoosier engineers) where the radial Speedster works well with it. I run almost 3 degrees negative front and rear. Lots of effort to switch between the two tires and compare. Looking at cars with TDRs on the track, they tend to ?drift? more. Fun to watch, and seem to be quick. They last longer and are very predictable. I have a set of the Proxies but, just me, I didn't know when they were going to lose grip. I need some skid pad time with them, and a camber change according to Hoosier to feel comfortable. I do use them for rain tires and off track parade laps. A good friend of mine loves his Proxies on his MGB, but I consistently out handle him in the corners. mike h On Wed, Sep 3, 2025 at 7:56?AM Tony Garmey via Fot > wrote: > Are the Proxy RRR the go to tire ? > This past weekend at Lime Rock , I ran new Hoosier speedsters . Thank you so much for the blood, sweat, tears, and passion that shown through in every aspect. Incredible teams, outstanding racing, and a well organized event. I took well over 12,000 shots with my trusty old Nikon and 15+ videos of paddock walks, grid walks, interviews, and as much as I could capture with my phone. Erich also took another 8000+ with my backup Nikon. If you are on Facebook, you can see the vids and shots I took with my phone to show everyone as quickly as possible, but my real work now begins, editing. I will have coverage in print as well in The Vintage Triumph Magazine, VTR's club magazine.( https://www.vintagetriumphregister.org/secure/signup) For the FOT, I shot every corner aside from West Bend at multiple angles of every Triumph. I plan to feature each racer in finishing order on my North American Triumphs FB page. I even got the #65 TR4A on track Friday and Saturday before #7 and #8 cam lobes decided to exit stage right (Sat AM) through a new custom breather hole out the side of the 4000+ hour Baja TR3 engine (impressive) that was transplanted to the bright green TR4A, so we got just about everyone in the false grid group shot, which I will start on first after work tonight. Then, a bigger feature for our 2025 KCup Champion, David Gott, so on and so forth. If any of you see your photos on Facebook (low resolution) and want them in high resolution for posters and print, please reach out to me, either by email, text, a call, or FB messenger. My contact info is below in my signature. Give me a little bit of time and I will get it done. I won't charge any FOT members for photos, although I never turn down a donation. I owe you all a lot of thanks for making it possible for this Iowa boy to live his dreams of traveling to bucket list tracks that I've wanted to go to since I was a little kid. What a special thing to walk the paddock and see smiling friends' faces to make the dream a reality! Excellent show, my Friends of Triumph! The Triumph part is secondary to the Friends part of the name, tenfold. Stay tuned, more to come! Here is one of my favorite shots so far, from my phone before looking at any camera memory cards. I just ran the numbers in my head and I've been to 14 and raced at eight FoT gatherings including the earlier Mid Ohio reunions. This one ranks right up there with the best of them. Between your efforts, the general FoT camaraderie, the paddock location and groupings, the track's wonderful approach to our featured group and the weather, OMG, what weather, it couldn't have been much better. I know I should have heeded your advice and done the test day so I was still learning on Monday, but I had the best time on track in many a year. We did a, shall I say, bonzai, drive home and made the 29 hour tow in 2 very long days. Between the success of this trip (Barbara had a great time), my personal unfinished business at Mosport from 2003, and the likelihood of a very similar number of Triumph's, I'm hoping we can make it in 2026. Do you know the weekend yet? Thanks so much for the fun, hospitality, and the effort you put into being a very, very good host for all of us. Thanks Henry for organizing such a great event at a fantastic track/facility. It was great to hang out with old friends and meet some new ones (just relax Tim Cook!) I did the Tuesday practice day, and having that gap from the practice day and the Sunday break made it feel like a relaxing vacation. The event was well run and my wife appreciated the driver's lounge. That was a nice touch. My weekend ended early during the Monday morning race. I think I broke my oil pump. Of course, I fitted a brand new one before this weekend because I didn't know any better. Oh well, hopefully I caught it before any serious damage. Here are some of my videos from the weekend. The Saturday afternoon race went well for me. I turned a fast enough time to qualify 5th for the Sunday morning race. Lime Rock Saturday Afternoon Kastner Cup Group Race I was only able to do a few laps on Monday, but things seemed to be going well until the oil pressure went away. I happened to glance at my gauges into the uphill turn and noticed the low oil pressure. Lime Rock Monday Morning Kastner Cup Group Race Well, there's always next year. See you at Mosport! It was well worth the effort. I did my own tally and realized we are quite similar in the numbers, if we include Mid Ohio 2002 I have raced 10 and attended another 2 as a spectator. While my track record for finishing KCup weekends may be a bit better than yours, certainly the enjoyment factor we experience is the same! These Kastner Cup events serve so many purposes, and this year's event will put Triumph Vintage Racing in front of many new pairs of eyes. We got kudos from all sides on how well the Triumphs ran, how racy we were, and how well we played with each other. Once we got past the early event on-track breakdowns, (Yeah, you guys know who you are!) everything settled in and our racers performed quite well, putting on a show that did not go unnoticed. Of particular note are several racers who had never driven the track before and quickly came up to speed on a surprisingly difficult track. Well done everyone! Moving fast through a field of slower cars is just another skill racers develop. You just keep doing what you are doing! I found all our drivers to be very predictable, which is key to good, fast, clean racing. Well done to all those folks who thought they were in the way, but in reality, were adding context to a fun experience! As a New Englander, I have been racing with those Spitfires from Vintage Racing Services my entire race career. When VRS owner Kent Bain was racing the white/green Spitfire (the one for sale in the paddock that has been discussed here) they never put him in the Small Bore group, they put him in Mid-Bore. And he always finished on the podium, more often than not on the top step. That shop has some real talent behind the wheel, and they know how to prep a Spitfire to GO. I wasn't the least bit surprised to see David Gussack as the class of our field in a VRS prepared Spitfire! Henry Frye On 2025-09-04 13:26, David Cutter wrote: > Henry, > > Shelby and I had a blast. Being the new guy, it was great to race at a track that's always been on my bucket list and to put faces to the names of so many of you. The car (#75 Halkias PLN) misbehaved quite a bit and the hot laps I was able to run were minimal. Then, in the final, just as I was starting to feel things in the car, the throttle linkage broke. (This was after an alternator failure, a throttle cable failure, a stuck throttle, etc... Drove one session with stuck throttle. Imagine braking and gassing at the same time for 20 minutes there.) I had help with all these issues and want to thank Jerry VanVlack (my Triumph Godfather), Bob Lang and Ned Sparrow especially. I learned a lot from these guys. I also want to thank my paddock neighbors, Claude, Todd, Dave and Lyman for their help and patience as I'm sure we were bugging them at some point. A couple other guys came by to help but they came and went before I found out who they were. Thank you if one of them was you. It was fun and the event was run flawlessly from my viewpoint. Congratulations to the winners. Again, well done Henry and team! Tom Podmore#75 TR6 On Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at 01:09:46 PM EDT, yellow04 via Fot wrote: Here's my video from the KCup race. Congrats to a well run event! So, ran in the HSR VIR Historics this past weekend. Was a lot of fun, but not much representation of British cars, much less mine being the only Triumph. A couple MGBs and a GSM Dart. Pretty much ran in the middle of the pack. VIR being my home track, I did not participate in the track orientation and practice sessions scheduled for all day on Thursday. When I arrived around 3pm Thursday for registration, the track was eerily quiet. I learned it was closed for the day around 1000am when Joe Nemechek had a horrible crash in the NASCAR practice session. I was told, Nemechek, in his 2008 NASCAR Toyota Camry, lost his brakes at T14 at about 180mph, went off into a barrel roll bouncing into and over the tire wall, which catapulted him over the catch fence into the trees. The trees ripped the roof off his car, and tree limbs tore his face shield off. I understand fortunately, he was able to exit the car under his own power, but was hospitalized and may have sustained an eye injury. He has been released from the hospital. I wish him a speedy recovery. Scary stuff. There were three qualifying sessions on Friday. Q1 was simply shaking some rust off and getting a feel for the other cars in Group 3, but still ran a 2:20 for P9 out of 24 cars. Temps during Q2 at 1:05pm were in the 90s with a hot greasy track, and could not find my rhythm, running a best 2:22 and dropping from P9 to P13 out of 24 cars. Then, while not fast, found some consistency in Q3 and ran 5 of 7 laps all at 2:22.5+/- finishing P10 out of 19 cars. Q3 Qualifying session: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AqqmWwnie0 Link to Saturday's Race 1 for Group 2/3. Car was running great, driver was somewhat improved, with a 2:18.6. Started P13, gained a few positions on the start and finished P10. There were a lot of fast Porsches which claimed the podiums all weekend. Out of the top 10 cars, five were Porsche 911s, one 914/6, a 944 along with a Ford Mustang and Capri, then my TR6. So, I was pretty happy considering the company. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBNfZPHQ3Vk&t=562s Saturday's Race 2 ended up only 3 laps due to red flag, but had a decent lap of 2:19. Sunday was basically a wash out for me with constant rain and I had no rain tires. They scratched the NASCAR historics, and the LMP race only had two cars which was like watching a leap frog training session, and hard to see the cars due to the rooster tails. I clearly need to clean my camera lense which was coated by debris from a car going off track in qualifying. Thanks! Not sure if they still do it, but it was reasonably priced and good for bulky items. If there is a Fastenal location on each side of your transaction, it might be worth looking into. I would be remiss if I didn?t talk about how that part applies this year?and how meaningful it is. I had mentioned for a brief moment about holding flashlights for Dad when I was a kid, as a hint and a nod, but there?s a lot more to that story. ? I could go on for days about what I?ve learned and applied from all the coaching and teaching I?ve received throughout the years. ?But I?ll paint a couple of quick pictures instead. ? ?Dad taught a lot about innovation and rule following at a young age. ?We are talking Pinewood Derby. ? I would run tried and true in the normal kids class, and the parents would have an?exhibition? class - which Dad would win. Followed by a rule change for next year. ?Meticulous preparation was kind of the point? not the rule change; I guess not everybody has a lathe.) On to Triumphs, which has huge depth for us, so it?s hard to give the big picture in few words. ? I live an hour away from Dad and I keep my car at his place? first, thanks even for that!! ? I?ve said for a while that I?m the only knucklehead loving an hour from a car that takes this much work! ? ?We?ve worked on Triunphs together all my life, and it?s a connection for us to say the least. ?When we first got the green number 80, we have been able to spend a TON more time together! ? It?s been quite an effort over the years getting the green car solid and reliable. ?Bill Throop?s(the original owner)?daughte Gretchenr, had reached out after I blew it up one time a few years ago and said,? we were always swearing at that car!? ? The swearing has decreased a huge amount over the last few years, and turned the other way into affection, and I think the car likes it. ? You can imagine all of the help I receive from Dad behind the scenes, with him testing new ideas on his car, and then we apply to the Green car, occasionally with me adding come color to a great idea. ?Needless to say about all of the phone calls or texts about ?I forgot to do XYZ? when I was there, and Dad jumps to action since I?m not right around the corner. ?? I was telling Henry at the beginning?of the cup weekend, that something bad typically happens to me during the Lastner Cuo race itself. ?I?ve had gremlins pop up and mess with the carbs, which is typically ignition as we all know. ?Or Ignition problems that?s really carb problems, or worse..? ?At Road America, I had a brain problem and could not tell my foot to press the brake pedal in turn 6 after I used up all my gray cells. ? Well, this year it came together for me. ? The car has been absolutely rock solid all year long, running a few extra events more than usual. ?So Rock solid, the only issue was from a rock to the radiator at Thompson! ? I cannot tell you what a Herculean feat that has been especially with the Green #80 and its long history of being a really fast grenade! ?And so, I really have a huge amount of thanks and appreciation to Phil Gott, my Dad, for getting us to the top, and helping us win the Kastner Cup as a team! The motor for this car was still being built so the motor and transmission from the BajaTriumph TR3 was swapped in to be used. That motor had probably close to 4,000 Race miles on it over the 7 years since it was built. I've included some in-car from Rick, Todd and Sean as they were behind me when the motor blew.
