Lyman,
        We typically bring our own and have never been questioned when
crossing the border.  We are able to purchase Sunoco 110 for just under
$10/gal locally.  I believe purchasing from MoSport works out to be nearly
$20/gal US.

Very timely question, Lyman!

Jason's response was spot on, racers from the States routinely transport 
race fuel to Mosport without issue.

I'll let one of our Canadian FOT report back what race fuel costs this 
year at Mosport, where we buy it by the liter! After the math is done, 
it usually works out to be about twice what we pay in the States.

You need to remember we will be getting a lot more track time than a 
normal race weekend, so plan accordingly. I usually bring at least 30 
gallons, and that does not include the two extra sessions we will be 
getting for the Cup race on Saturday or our extra race on Sunday. Also 
not included, the Thursday test day!

Those who have not run the track will want to run as many of the test 
sessions as possible, between the blind corners and elevation change 
there is a lot to figure out. So add that to your fuel calculation! 
Remember, our host VARAC does require anyone who has not run Mosport to 
run the test day.

Well that was the best free watch I've had in a while.
Each video was better and worse than the previous one.
You were going so fast.
On the limit.
Above all- what should be noticed is  Chuck's Overwhelmingly awesome
General AWARENESS as a Driver.
Sure, He fucked up a few times, and lost a race he could have won...
But the Guy knows his car and has true vision about everything that is
going on around him.while he is racing.
You can see it in his hand signals, his 360 Degrees of vision and his smart
choices in each important racing moment.
Many text book examples of how good driving is done.
My overall rating of his performance here is a solid C+

Great information in this post, we now know the Queens Wave on the 
cooldown lap has no effect whatsoever on the Friendly Ghost Racing 
grading curve.

It just so happens that I was asked this year by the event chair of the
VARAC Vintage Grand Prix to provide a writeup from an American?s
perspective to the border crossing, and what follows is the text I
prepared for her that was sent to all US based racers. As everyone
should know by now, the 2026 Kastner Cup will be at Mosport, (currently
known as Canadian Tire Motorsports Park) and folks from the States will
obviously need to cross the US/Canadian border with their fully loaded
race rigs. The subject of the border crossing comes up every time I talk
to a fellow racer about experiencing Mosport, everyone is concerned that
something bad will happen at the border. In the almost 20 times I have
done it, I have never had a problem.

An American racer's perspective to the border crossing

I have been asked to provide an American's perspective to the biggest
obstacle we have to race in Canada, the border crossing. We have been
enjoying the VARAC Vintage Festival at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park
(Mosport) for about 20 years. The border crossing question is the one I
hear all the time when trying to convince my American friends they need
to check out my favorite race weekend of the season.

My rig has always been an RV pulling an enclosed trailer. First a small
Class C, now a medium size Class A. Our point of entry is Thousand
Islands, and friends who use the Lewiston Bridge (Niagara Falls)
crossing report the same experience.

The basics:

Passports are required for everyone in the rig. Have all the passports
in your hand as you drive up to the border agent and hand them over as
you exchange pleasantries.

Do not hand the border crossing guard anything other than your
passport(s). If they need anything else, they will ask for it. Anything
you give to the border agent, they will take the time to read and
understand, and you will complicate matters and lose time. The only
additional information I have ever been asked to provide entering Canada
is the license number of the RV because my trailer blocks their camera
view.

Be prepared with documentation should you need it. Current
registration and insurance information on your tow rig and trailer. Log
book for the race car. (I have a couple results sheets that show my name
next to the car make and model) I always have this information at arms
reach but have never been asked to produce it.

Keep in mind your interaction with any border guard will go much
smoother and faster if you remain pleasant and answer all questions
succinctly without interjecting any humor. Remember Dragnet? Just the
facts, ma'am.  That's your mantra when talking to any border agent!

Do not attempt to bring any firearms of any kind, or any prohibited
substances to Canada. Educate yourself on what your limits for alcohol
and tobacco are, and what is prohibited.

One of the items folks talk about is the requirement of a list of the
contents of your trailer. Preparing this list seems like a daunting
task, but here are two pieces of good news. First, an acceptable list
does not need to identify every item in a tote or toolbox, just the
number of totes or toolboxes. If I were to do a list for my rig, it
would include the race car, bicycle, 1 large tote of tools, three medium
sized totes with tools and spare race car parts for my personal use, one
tall toolbox, one short toolbox, two trailer spares, 4 race car wheels
and tires, two fuel jugs, 1 pair Race Ramps and a canopy. Done.

The other piece of good news, it seems very few veterans of the border
crossing even bother with a list anymore. In all the years I have been
racing in Canada, I have been asked for my list once, and it was not
from the border agent. It was from a person walking the line of vehicles
waiting to enter the US. When I told her I didn't have one, she was
slightly annoyed and instructed me to prepare the list for next time and
kept walking.

I didn't find any guidance on the US Customs and Border Protection
website about this list of personal property you intend to take with you
to and from Canada. If it is there, it is buried deep! I haven't
prepared a list in years.

Some thoughts on each crossing:

Entering Canada:

Keep in mind the Canadians are concerned about where we are going and
what we are doing in their country. Naturally, their job is stopping any
prohibited items from entering Canada, and to make sure people bringing
goods for resale in Canada pay whatever duty or tariff they might owe.
Since we are going to bring all our stuff home with us, this does not
apply to us, racers do not have pay any duty. So be prepared for
questions about what you are bringing into Canada. I always say we are
participating in a race weekend at Mosport in Bowmanville, Ontario and
my race car is in the trailer. Our experience with the Canadian Border
guards has always been very easy, and it is for most people. In these
days of Big Brother, when your passport gets scanned by the border
agent, they see all kinds of data pop up, and their questions will
reflect what they see.  I believe if you have a permit to carry
concealed firearms, that pops up and expect more questions about guns.
That kind of thing. One question I get occasionally is When was the
last time you were in Canada? Now I think about that one in advance so
I have the correct answer ready. Assuming you have lived a clean life
without running afoul of the authorities, the border guard should
process you in a couple minutes and send you on your way.

Returning to the US:

Keep in mind the US agents are most concerned about stopping illegal
immigration and the importation of illegal substances. It seems a racer
returning to the States on a Sunday or Monday does not seem to be a big
risk. We typically get a couple of softball questions and are sent on
our way. When world affairs warranted it, I had my RV boarded by guards
looking for undeclared people. I have been asked by the agent for the
keys to my enclosed trailer for an inspection that consisted of opening
the back door and peering in with a flashlight. Neither of these have
happened in several years. If anything like these things happen, just
let the border folks do their job, and you will be on your way in short
order.

After you get a couple of border crossings under your belt, you realize
it is no big deal. Then your biggest concern shifts to how long the line
is to get processed!

The Triumphs returning to Mosport will be a pretty big deal. The
Canadians are excited to have us. The event is by far the best race
weekend I attend every year. The track is legendary, the racing is
extraordinary. More details once we get past Lime Rock over Labor Day
weekend!

my tools and racing supplies/spares for a weekend at the track.  That has
been sufficient in my case.

The only concern they have (every year entering Canada) is that I must
bring my sorry looking race car back with me when I return.

LOL!!! A friend restoring a TR6 related the following....

"Previously, I told you I was having issues starting the car. Well, seems when they media blasted the car to remove the old paint, they put a black, hockey puck style plug in the exhaust to keep the exhaust free of debris. I didn't see it when I reassembled the exhaust to the car. I even dropped the muffler, ran tubing up the exhaust pipe, pulled the tubing back out of the tail pipe, measured it and determined the exhaust was not blocked. Seems my measurements were off by about an inch. So, after hours and hours of cam settings, timing chains, valve timing and such, I re-checked and sure enough. Just a plugged exhaust.

Keep the hockey puck. I have one in my toolbox. It's a handy 1" lift I place on the saddle of my floor jack to lift the car just that "one more inch" to get the jackstand one notch higher.

Nearly half my life!  Team dot Net went on the air 35 years ago today, 
April 11th, 1991.  Been through a lot of ups and down over the years, 
many different computers, different ISPs, but almost always there.  I 
won't go into the times that ISP problems shut it down for days, or even 
weeks at a time.

But it is still here, still on the air, still serving the purpose I have 
always upheld, connecting like minded users to mostly car stuff.  And 
always for free.  I do remember back in the beginning it was pretty 
expensive to run.  Fast, at home internet was not widely available.  And 
the first server, one of the earliest PCs in the valley to run at over 
100 Mhz ( Yes, MEGA Hertz! ) cost me $2,500 dollars.  Luckily paid for 
by generous contributions from list members.

Time marches on, and so does Team Net.  I'll keep it going as long as I 
can, health permitting.  Who knows, maybe I'll be sending out a 50th 
birthday notice!

I miss team.net in its original iteration. One of my complaints about today's world is there's too damn many ways to communicate. Back in the day when I needed to contact the autocross world, one message on team.net would do it. Now it takes 130+ postings on separate Facebook pages to achieve the same effect and people seem to be migrating away from that.

But congratulations to you, Mark. You bring the world together! ??

My starter has not been dependable in colder weather.  It takes several attempts to get the pinion engaged.  Once it "catches" it'll start beautifully. I just pulled it and the pinion was hanging up.  I cleaned it up and it now returns nicely to the "resting" position.  As long as it's out, I'm considering a Hi-Torque starter.  What are you running, are you happy with it and where did you get it?

I sell "WOSP" brand starters from my biz. They are new units, not reman or rebuilt like many out there. They have been a good seller over a number of years and haven't had any issues I'm aware of. address.  In theory, at least, some of this stuff doesn't always work. 
The server is running an ancient version of the operating system, the

In cleaning out my dad's shop, I've assembled a large pile of....stuff.  Most of it bits and pieces that came off of Spitfire and GT6 cars.  Some of it clearly junk and some of it maybe worth saving.

I have little interest in sorting g through this and figuring out what's worth saving.

Do I just dumpsterize the whole lot?   Feels sacrilegious but that's what's going to happen someday when some poor schmuck is cleaning out MY shop.

I've now cleaned out 5 houses from family members. If you have any time, it's worth notifying local to you folks for a come and take it party. The local British Car clubs in my area do this from time to tim. Sometimes the folks will help you determine if there's anything valuable in the mix. After that, I pile stuff into recyle-able, re-useable and just plain junk.
It's work, but you gave it a shot to find a use for the stuff and by recycling, you keep stuff out of land fills...
IF you're pressed for time or don't have the motivation to do it, dumpster it. Then don't look back.

I used to have a 4:55 set, but it got sold at auction back in 2005.  I 
lost my job at the U, got behind on my storage rental, and the contents 
were sold as a lot for like 300 bucks.  Not only the gearset, but a big 
TR Detroit locker, a Spitfire/GT6 Quaife unit, all my Weber airhorns, 
chokes and venturis, ( The box of brass bits with calibrated holes was 
home in my garage ) a Ford 710? 1600 short block from a Lotus Europa, a 
couple of big TR overdrive transmissions, a D type Spit overdrive, a 
Spitfire parts car, and a load of various body panels, electrical parts, 
and so on.

Last time I found a 4:55 for my Spitfire (back in the early oughts sometime) it came from Canley Classics in the UK. 

After breaking several earlier 4:55s -- the last one I tore off EVERY tooth! -- I had that one from Canley shotpeened before putting it in the car. It lasted. 

I've heard of 4:88s but never seen a live one in 50 years of racinng a Spitfire. I think it's a mythical animal. ?

After reading Tony's comment, I reread Lyman's original post. I had 
glazed over the fact Lynam is thinking of bringing 60 gallons of fuel, 
plus I assume whatever is in the car's fuel cell. While Tony's point 
seems quite valid, I can only address the border crossing!

Keep in mind one of the things the Canadian Border guards are looking 
for is Americans crossing into Canada with goods they intend to sell, as 
there would be duty to pay on that. There is no duty to pay if you don't 
sell anything in Canada. I think it might be an awkward conversation 
trying to convince someone you are attending a 3 day race event with a 4 
cylinder race car and intend to burn 60+ gallons of fuel. But, in my 
experience, you are not going to be asked how much fuel you are bringing 
in. If I was asked, my response to that question would be "I only have 
what I intend to use at the track".

I have heard some US racers will transport their fuel jugs IN the race 
car, so if the question of race fuel comes up at the border, they can 
truthfully as say they are only bringing what's in the car.

I bring 5 jugs, 25 gallons, plus a full fuel cell. (I do not run test 
day) Pretty easy to convince someone that amount is for personal use, if 
I was ever asked. I have never been questioned.

Another thing to keep in mind, attrition is always a factor. It is 
common on Sunday to have racers who didn't bring enough fuel to approach 
someone who broke and "bartering" for their unused race fuel.

Three weeks ago Mark Cook was kind enough to repost a short article I 
wrote for VARAC last year about Americans crossing the border, it's 
pretty clear how the crossing works for racers.

Assuming you use one of the large, popular crossing points, (which I 
highly recommend) as you approach the border you will see the Customs 
buildings. This is where you would pull in, park, and go inside to deal 
with Customs, pay duty, find someone to stamp you inventory sheet, etc. 
There is nobody there to tell you to pull in, the vast majority of 
travelers simply keep driving and get in line to chat with the nice 
Canadian in the border crossing booth. The conversation should go like I 
explained in my article, and in a few short minutes you are driving in 
Canada, trying to remember on the fly how to convert Kilometers per Hour 
into Miles per Hour! (Yes, Canada uses KPH)

Yes on concern of ?hassle? meaning the process of bringing quantities of race fuel ie: 8x 5gal, 40 gallons. Believe customs in Canada allows only 15 gallons only, 3x 5gal jugs. 
Quantity would require declaration statement, hazardous material, plus time dealing with customs, the ?hassle?.. so I feel transporting 40gal. without declaring could lead to big trouble and jeopardize our efforts to race!!!
 Guess we will only bring 15gal to run first day and by our fuel at track at high cost!
Only draw back is we have run Sunoco 100 interesting and Dyno tune. Using track fuel adds to an unknown! Thanks for all input

I have a bare Spitfire block residing in Des Plaines IL under Irv's watch.  If anybody might be passing through that area on the way to Gingerman, Mosport, Grattan, Put-In-Bay or even a rest stop on the Ohio turnpike in Northern Ohio that I could meet you at and you could do a brotha a solid, I would be grateful.

Well folks, looks like it's time to thin the herd a bit. We are selling our TR-3 race car. It's been great fun, but having five race cars for two drivers is rather over the top...even for us! This car was a long time Midwest competitor prior to us buying and rebuilding it. I've raced it three times including the Kastner Cup in 2024. It's been a solid runner and (as cringe worthy as this phrase is) it is indeed race ready. Belts are good till 2027, tires are good, freshly checklisted and has a half tank of VP110 race fuel. It is stored in a heated shop year-round.?This is by no means a trailer queen, it presents decently, but there are plenty of waves in the body and the paint has some chips and orange peel. I have attached the build sheet detailing the car and have tons of photos I can share.?We are asking $25k OBO. I'm happy to show the car and chat or do a video call. It's here at our house in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (maybe pick it up and do a race at Road America? 2 miles away!).Thanks for looking! Jake & Karen??
