Message-ID: Last year I asked Henry which Class we should register the TR4 in. Henry stated... "I suggest putting yourself in Group 2B - Over 1:47.5. If you break out and go faster, you automatically advance to the next fastest group." So I registered us in Group 2B. Looking at the Roster I see LOTS of similar and maybe faster TR4's running in VH 5 which is the Over 1:50 group. Currently in VH 4 there are just two TR4. Myself and Bob Kramer. The other Triumphs in that group are GT6. In the under 1:47 VH 3 Class I see Dave Gott, Tony Drews, Chuck Gee and Michael Deweerd in TR4s Meanwhile in the Over 1:50 Class I see Matt Molson, Brendon and Sean Alexander, Phil Gott and Greg Thompson. So the question is should I request to be moved to VH 5 or stay in VH 4 and expect that some of the TR4 and the Ambro currently in VH 5 are gonna get bumped up to VH 4 once they start putting down some laps? I've gone back and forth with Ted Michalos, VARAC's Race Director, Ted is the guy managing the Classing issue. Here is how we are going to make sure everybody is as close as possible to where they need to be, and make Ted's (and my) life easier! Everybody who has not run Mosport for some time is required to run the test day. I believe Bill Babcock's comment cements the rationale behind that! Racers will want to find someone to put a stopwatch on one of their later sessions on Thursday, or if you use an in-car lap timer, perfect! Another scenario is run your in-car camera and put a stopwatch on the playback. Once you have experienced the track and have some lap times, find me in the paddock. If you still have questions, I am happy to talk them through with you. I can help you decide what group you should start in. I will collect everyone's request for a group change and present them all at once to Ted. I will mark up a spreadsheet and my intention is to get it into Ted's hands no more than one hour after the track goes quiet on Thursday. Practice and qualifying will take place on Friday. As you figure out how to find more time on track, hopefully you will bust out of your bracket. That is a good thing! If you want/need to move groups, you will need to find Ted and request to be changed. Ted will be broadcasting some further instructions through MotorsportsReg shortly, they should jive for the most part with my instructions here. Stay tuned, more to come. Henry Frye KCup Chair 860.508.3118 -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [Fot] Classing question for Mosport. I reached out to the Race Director, we will not have the benefit of timing and scoring on Thursday. I suggest people prepare to have your crew put a stopwatch on you during your test day laps, find out where your comfort zone is, and on Thursday after the track goes quiet we can figure out where you will fit in best. I will say it again, I think several of us were quite conservative while chosing their run group! As the vast majority of us will be arriving on Wednesday to run the Thursday test day, Ted will arrange for a scrutineer (that's Canadian for tech inspector) to come down to us. We are getting a roving tech inspector for Wednesday only. Tech is officially open from 5:30 to 8:00, I am not sure when or for how long they can spare their scrutineer. Here's the good news. Have you run your race car at least once this year? Cars with a signed/stamped logbook page showing you passed tech for an event in 2026 will not require inspecting. This does not need to be an annual tech, just prove you passed tech for your last event and that event was in 2026. You will need to show your helmet, but not your other safety gear. VARAC is still accepting Snell 2015 helmets this year. The roving scrutineer will be able to process the quick tech (no car inspection) and the full tech in your paddock space. Tech is NOT required to run test day. If you arrive too late on Wednesday for tech, or Thursday morning, you can run your full test day without the event tech, but will need to plan on making time on Thursday. Historically, tech is very busy at this event as it is the first event for many Canadian racers. It's all coming together! I wholeheartedly agree with you about 5B. It is one of those corners you pitch the car into to get a nice little slide going, so you can mash the accelerator way early. If you just drive around the corner, you are much slower on the accelerator as you are trying to keep the rear end under you. Another tip I am going to throw out there is how imperative it is to hit the first apex on Turn 2. See the attachment, a screen grab from my in-car camera. It is easy to spot, so many cars have dropped wheels off the pavement that they had to put in a patch. It's easy to see, not easy to touch! Next email, our paddock space! It is identified in the email everyone should have received yesterday from Race Director Ted Michalos. Naturally the area is not large, and we are expected to pack in tight and get the vast majority of our cars there. I asked for the actual measurements several times but never got them, so I was not able to lay out the paddock with assigned spaces. For those of you who are familiar with the area, I was just told the abandoned emergency vehicles that have been occupying space there for years have been removed! I have been told that no one, including me, will be able to get up to the paddock space before 5PM at the earliest. Official load in time starts at 5:30. After registering, we will be directed to a large space adjacent the lower paddock for queueing up. It will make life easier if we can all queue up together in the lower paddock, so when our area is released we can have an orderly procession up the hill and not lose anybody! Of the 32 cars we are expecting, I believe 23 are required to run test day on Thursday. I assume that means the vast majority of us will arrive on Wednesday, so the load in will be interesting, to say the least. Please plan on using the paddock space primarily for cars, use the grass perimeter for camping wherever possible. Everyone's patience is much appreciated! We are currently expecting about 32 cars. I am not sure if we will all fit in Paddock B, there is overflow paddock space just up the hill in adjacent Paddock A. If we need to use some of that space, so be it. Regarding camping at the track, ABSOLUTELY NO FIRES ALLOWED. You will be asked to leave immediately if you try the campfire thing. Remember, the track puts on a dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so plan your food accordingly. Also, there is live entertainment every night as well, and the bands will be playing in the main tent which is right next to our paddock area. I will apologize now, you can hear the band from our paddock when they are playing. Historically, on Saturday night the Mudmen take the stage, they have quite a following and are certainly entertaining! There is no electric service available, if you need power plan on bringing a generator. Please be considerate of your neighbors when running your generator! Last item, for those of us camping at the track, consider staying over in the paddock on Sunday evening. Many of us do just that, and it is a nice way to take your time breaking down and packing, have a relaxing meal, then make it an early night. The ride home after a good sleep is always better in my book. We are getting close! See everyone next week! The weather was the big event for the day - soaking wet until about 10 AM, then it flip-flopped from sun to showers seemingly about every 20 minutes. On balance, though, there were some mostly dry sessions and good learning experiences for this Mosport newbie. The track is mostly awesome. Kind of feels like Watkins glen, except there are more rapid elevation changes and some really challenging corners. I say mostly because the pavement is surprisingly not great. Some areas that are pretty bumpy. Not enough to ruin the experience, but enough to notice. On balance, it?s one of the more fun tracks I?ve driven, and I suspect I?ll make the eight hour tow to do it again next year. Already the usual breakage in the Triumph crowd. A number of drivers figured out the proper line and broke out from thier timing group. So, now there's a bunch of Triumphs in Group 1 and under 1:45 with Henry at 1:41, Tim Cook at 1:42 and several in the 1: 43s. As Henry and others indicated, carrying the "MO" in just a couple spots makes a big difference in laptime... a few drivers will need wheelbarrows after this weekend. My overall impression to this point would be that Mosport is a fast momentum circuit but it's pretty obvious that it can bite hard if you get it wrong. While the old turn 2 was interesting to watch when the runoff was unpaved, the generous paved outside area gives some comfort that there's somewhere to go if you go in way too hot. Same for turn 8. But I have to say that the racer attitude here is very good and every one seems to want to help and provide suggestions and support. Folks are really friendly. Today we run the Kastner Cup race at 1 30, and there's definitely a handful of candidates for the Cup. Last tidbit - Kieth Files and his wife Louisa were walking around the Triumphs paddock yesterday and it was a real treat to chat with them! OK, time to go check the car. One "highlight" was a LOT of double yellow laps due to various reasons. That said, the Kastner Cup race ran almost flawlessly bar a big spin and related pandemonium that created near the front of the field. The overall winner of the Kastner Cup race was Tim Cook in the really Kool, REALLY FAST Group 44 tribute TR8. Henry was second and Jesse Darrow rounds out the podium after a thrilling last lap duel with this author. I personally can't wait to see the videos from my car and Chuck Gee as the two Darrow Spitfires, Chuck and me had some great back and forth until the spin... and the spin was pretty spectacular in Turn 1 about 5 laps in. There was a local yellow at 1 for the rest of the race, so one passing place was out of the mix. I'm certain that the spectators enjoyed the race. As far as attrition, Dave Gott had a front left vertical link failure that happened at the entrance to Moss while the Group 1 race was under caution following the pace car. Broken suspension is not good, but going under 30 mph (estimate) probably kept the outcome from being "really bad". Dave has some work to do, but we suspect it'll include some improvements. At the Kastner Cup presentation, I was shocked - truly - when Kieth Files called my name. Honestly, a huge thank you for the recognition. I am honored. And with that next year the Kastner Cup heads to Grattan! Today there's a full slate with the highlights of the Jack Drews Memorial and several mixed group races. And sky is perfect. They welcomed the Triumphs with open arms, provided lots of track time, and fed us well. - We had the mandatory test day on Thursday with 4 on track sessions. I ran 3 of those. The race weekend had 10 sessions and I ran 9 of those. My car worked very well all weekend with just a couple of minor issues that were easily fixed. I never even had to add oil or water the whole time. Crazy. Just A LOT of gas. - Bill was right. The Mosport track is both fun and terrifying at the same time. I felt like I was doing pretty good most of the weekend, but Henry still turned a lap 3 seconds faster than my best time. I could never really get comfortable going into turn 2. I even tried just closing my eyes and hoping for the best, but that didn?t work either. I?m thinking I only achieved 2 3/4 testicles rather than a full 3. - Hanging out with fellow FOT racers is always a great time. There isn?t a bad one amongst us (except for me, maybe). Everyone has a good time, races clean, and is always willing to lend a hand or spare part if needed. - Bob Lang, Jesse Darrow, and Pat Darrow provided some great racing fun. I?ll post the video I took during the Kastner Cup race and you?ll see what I mean. All three are my kind of people, and I hope they take that as the compliment I intend it to be! - Thanks to Greg Thompson who gave me one of those fancy blue Bosch coils after my Pertronix coil failed. The car ran so much better after that. - Congrats to Bob Lang for winning the Kastner Cup. He deserved it. - It was an honor to take 2nd place in the Jack Drews Memorial race. I deserved 3rd, but Jesse Darrow was kind enough to run out of gas towards the end. Fortunately for me, he doesn?t suspect any foul play. I also won the Peggy Kastner fastest TR4 award, which was a nice bonus. - A big thanks to Henry Frye for organizing this one. I always wanted to race at Mosport and he gave me the reason to finally do it. I truly appreciate your efforts and your friendship Henry. I?m sure I forgot something but this email is already too long. Hope to see you all at the next one! Unfortunately the car suffered multiple issues along the way; a spark plug came apart in an early practice session and the ceramic portion was ejected along with the attached plug wire. Came in on 3 cylinders but the guts of the plug must have gotten sucked in on the downstroke as the cylinder wall got a bit scuffed. It was noisy the rest of the way, but not hurting too bad. Then another oddity happened dumping most of the crankcase onto the track in turn 5. The track workers handed me my oil filter when they loaded the car. The steel spin on adapter threads had pulled their mates out of the Purolator filter head. I thought my weekend was over but an FOT had a replacement head and adapter. When I went to screw on the filter the threads on the new adapter seemed a little loose and I took some time trying to clean up the threads on the original one, but I couldn?t get them cleaned up satisfactorily. I tried the new one again, this time tightening the filter all the way and it seemed fine. I was back in business in time to qualify and do the cup race. I parked it after that to save it for the memorial race. Sunday morning I rechecked everything and made sure the filter was tight with an oil filter wrench. As the guys on track know it didn?t last. The oil filter came loose and started dumping oil again, this time without be noticing until I was 3 wide trying to pass two cars to my left coming out of 5C. At speed I got off to the grass as fast as I could but I ruined a second session for you all. I?m really sorry about that. I restarted it on the grass and since it has oil pressure I was able to drive up the grass and get behind the wall and into the lower paddock. I picked it up with my trailer and didn?t open the hood. When I saw the loose filter it was a relief and regret sandwich. No blown engine, no major issues, no fireballs. I?ve oiled a track 4 times in 3 years of racing, once in Tx, once here in 2003 and 2 times this weekend. Mosport clearly owns me, but I finished the J Cup and that?s the reason I had to come back. For 2027, Jason Ostrowski and I are giving Henry a well deserved break and, with partnership from VSCDA, will host the 25th Kastner Cup at Grattan Raceway in Belding, MI August 13-15. For those that have never been, Grattan is an absolutely remarkable club track - possibly the most challenging 2 miles in the country. I had been there multiple times before as crew, but finally got the chance to race there last year - absolutely incredible. Every corner has a trick - it's either blind, or changing elevation, or changing camber, or a combination of all of them. Strap your Triumph to a roller coaster and you've got Grattan. It is the true definition of the driver's track. The track is about 20 minutes northeast of Grand Rapids so there are plenty of hotel options within easy drive. For those that like a laid back paddock - this is it. It's a step back in time to grassroots road racing and VSCDA does a great job celebrating that spirit throughout the weekend. The Midwest Triumph community has a rich history as part of this VSCDA staple, and we want all of you to experience it with us. More information to come, but please mark your calendars now. We are happy to do our part to keep the Kastner Cup going. It is truly one of greatest things going in Vintage Racing Today! More to come, including a per driver series of shots, based on finishing position. In this photo, I did some Ai bodywork on Pat Darrow's Spitfire, fyi. I will send high-res shots later. This whole "work" thing gets in the way, a lot! As of 6am today, I have all photos backed up twice and in the process of a third time at home. I shot 21,197 photos on my old trusty Nikon, 2090 on a Fuji, 1909 on another Fuji, and the best assistant I could ask for, Erich Hischberger took 8919 photos on my other Nikon. That is 34,115 photos! I will be releasing it all on my Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/NorthAmTriumphs). There is already a ton of trackside video on the page. I will also make a Dropbox file for all drivers and send them to the FOT list so you can save your photos in high resolution, just in case you wanted to print poster-sized shots. This may take a while, but I will do my best. What a weekend, what a show! The Friends of Triumph really know how to bring the excitement. I felt the crowd and it was a spectacle! Thank you so much for letting me tag along! I noticed a few of my shots were used for the trading cards that VARAC released. Wow, I am honored! I am glad you could use some of my shots. That is exactly why I send them. I would consider that perfect usage. It is an absolute honor to be recognized with the Amici Triumph Award. I am humbled and blessed to be a fly on the wall. It was pretty amazing on so many levels, the track, the Canadian hospitality, having all our friends together again to race for the Cup. Our neighbors to the north always put on a great event, and this year was no different. Being the featured marque, we had no less than 10 sessions available to us, but I was only able to do 9. By the time that last race of the weekend came around, I was spent. The car seemed ready and able, my mind was all in, but it was my body that that convinced me I was done! I was literally sore from tossing the car around all those laps at speed! I wish I could have been more effective setting the schedule a little better, I did push back but we got what we got. One of the problems when we get so much track time having cars that run in 4 different groups is getting that track time spread out enough to be comfortable. I feel our racers who were seeing the track for the first time at speed did a wonderful job. Congrats to all first timers for surviving turns 1, 2 and 8, plus figuring out how to get around 5B. It takes a very special person to be able to grow that third testicle on their first visit to Mosport, it took me years to be able to go all out in 1 and 2. I know there is still more speed for me in turn 8, but that risk to reward buzzer in my head goes off every time I try to find it! A heartfelt thanks to Keith Files who came over from the UK to be our Grand Marshal, job well done Keith. It was a privilege to meet the lovely Louisa as well! Kudos to Kallie Sukey, what a great job she did with only a handful of races under her belt. The former Bill Rampe Spit was looking great out there, I have no doubt Kallie will be mixing it up with the best of us soon! The Darrow brothers came with that incredibly fast pair of matching Spits and put on quite a show. They Triumphed over adversity all weekend, great fun to watch. Then there was Fireball Bob Kramer. Surviving the epic tow from Texas, he came trying to break the jinx of Mosport. He was unsuccessful, I am afraid. He just earned another nickname, Oily Bob! Sorry Bob, hopefully your next event goes better! Then we have the luckiest person at the track, our most recent Kastner Cup winner Dave Gott. In one of the group races, we are circling the track under double yellow for an unrelated incident when I come around and see Dave's TR4 beached in a very peculiar place. I think nobody would pull off there if they had a choice. Next time around, the flatbed was there pulling the car backwards and I could see the left front wheel flopping down, it looked like he broke a ball joint! I shuddered thinking how the heck did that happen under yellow in the ONLY slow corner on the whole track when only moments before I know he was running right hand corners at full chat where that failure would be catastrophic. I suggested he buy a lottery ticket... Of course I have no clue if Canada even does the lottery thing! Turns out it was a snapped upright, it broke just above the threads that screw into the trunnion. Unfortunately, Dave was done for the weekend. We had our share of mechanical issues on top of Dave's near calamity, I saw at least 3 head gasket replacements, a diff failure, a gearbox shredded some gears, and a blown out bespoke shock just to name a few. Most persevered to get things fixed, some became spectators not by choice but by necessity. A pretty typical showing for our group, as we know attrition is part of the sport. Thanks to all the non-racers who showed up, we had no less than 10 of our Western Pennsylvania Triumph buds, plus our friends Irv Korey and Jay Holecamp came from Illinois. Dave Amys and his wife drove their beautiful TR6 all the way from Minnesota to be with us! Plus more I can't think of at the moment, sorry about that folks! I'll post a couple of race reports shortly, and call it a wrap on my time as your race chair. Friday was an easy day, a morning practice session, then an afternoon qualifying session. Unfortunately for Mike Deweerd, his TR8 was out for the weekend on Friday. This made it a little clearer what to expect up front the rest of the event, with only one TR8 running it was Tim Cook's time to shine up front. Spoiler alert, he did not disappoint! Our first special race was the Frank Mount Memorial MG/TR Challenge. To give you some history, Triumphs have dominated this race for a while now. The Canadians might just be a little bit sore about that fact, and the rules for the race are always weighted heavily on participation rather than finishing order! This year, they really didn't try to hide their bias, they arranged the starting order as first come, first served with the MG's taking the first 15 grid spots! Just to be sure we had it as tough as possible, they put Tim Cook with his TR8 in the race group immediately preceding the MG/TR Challenge race, so his participation would be questionable. Then an added deterrent, the scheduled the MG/TR Challenge just before the lunch break, and the Kastner Cup just after lunch, so with minimal turnaround time many of our guys chose to sit out the Challenge race. I am not sure what else they could have done to us, other than leaving one plug wire off per car! Waiting for the grid to open, we strategized to put me in the TR250 first, Phil Gott and Bob Lang lined up behind me. Also in line were Greg Thompson, Walt Hollowell, Stewart Wigg and Dave Riddle. I had talked to Tim Cook, his plan was to run the Challenge race if things went well in his group race immediately prior. On the MG side, the car to beat was an MG Midget piloted by the very talented and always fast Nick Pratt. Nick and I have had some epic David and Goliath battles, Goliath has had the slight edge in the past and has been victorious. The race starts with me taking a couple laps to clear the lion's share of the MG's. It seems to me they are doing a great job blocking me in wherever possible, but nobody is so obvious I can cry foul. When I finally get clear track Nick has been doing fast laps by himself, and I have over 7 seconds to make up. I settle in to the job at hand, and the gap closes. Then, as I am motoring up the back straight, I see in my mirror a white dot getting bigger! Tim made the race, and he in on the hunt as well! The TR8 blows by me in a flash, and I'm thinking the good guys have this one in the bag, if time runs out for me at least Tim will be first. Then two laps later on lap 8, I turn my best lap of the race, a 1:40.1 and I pass Nick on the back straight. Triumph 1 - 2, and I keep Tim in my sights as he stays about 3 seconds in front of me for the last 4 laps. So it's Tim on the top step of the podium, I come in second and Nick Pratt third. Bob Lang ran 4th overall. So I am not sure how the math worked out for which team won, but I am pretty sure we didn't stand a chance with the schedule effectively benching most of our team. But of course, it doesn't matter, we all had fun and the streak of Triumphs dominating the top spot is unbroken! Next up, the Kastner Cup race! Not much to say here other than I started second and finished second. I was driving the wheels off the car trying to keep up with Tim's TR8, I kept the gap between 1.5 to 3 seconds most of the race. Unfortunately, when Pat Darrow had his little shunt in 1, that caused a waiving yellow for the rest of the session, and I caught traffic on lap 11 and 12 in the yellow flag zone, so the gap opened up to 5.5 seconds at the end. Tim's comment to me after the race was thanks for keeping him honest, my comment to him was I thought I had to work way harder than he did, in which he agreed with me! My best lap was a 1:41.19 vs Tim with a 1:40.95, so that made me feel pretty good about the race. Then on Sunday, the Jack Drews Memorial Race, formerly known as the Reunion Race! Tim had to get home on Sunday, so was packed up and gone by the time racing started on Sunday. I was on pole, and Jesse Darrow did all he could to keep me honest! I put about a 2.5 second gap on Jesse when Oily Bob did his thing for the last time, putting a layer of oil up most of the back straight. We reported to the pits and waited a solid half hour for the track to get cleaned. I was sure we were done, but VARAC announced they were going to let us go green for another 10 minutes! This time it was Jesse driving like a man on a mission, keeping me honest until suddenly, he was gone. In fact, I saw nobody in my mirrors for the last two laps, upon finishing I see I gapped Chuck Gee in second place by 14.2 seconds in 6 laps! Thanks for the motivation, Jesse! At the podium, Jesse tried to sneak into Chuck's second place pedestal, too funny. Apparently, Jesse ran out of fuel! Bob Lang took third. Finally, my group race! My bracket, VH3, means don't go faster than a 1:40. For whatever reason, I happen to run at the bottom of that bracket, a 1:40 is a good time for me. As such, I do well with the bracket. This year was no different, I finished first in VH3 in the 3 races leading up to the feature race Sunday afternoon. This year we had a bunch of Mustangs that had never run with VARAC before, and for whatever reason they put them with us in Vintage Historic. Not a great fit, and the one that was always gridded with me had a problem with his fuel cell, he kept dumping gas on corners at the beginning of the race. It was a slippery situation, to say the least! And it took him several laps to put down a couple of faster laps than me to be out of my hair. So in the feature, I am coming around turn 10 finishing up lap 2, and I am too close to the fuel spilling Mustang. The second place VH3 car, a 911, gets a better run than I do and passes me going into 1. I fall back behind him and find out he has a bit more straight line speed, but is absolutely hopeless in 1 and 2. For 3 laps I follow watching closely, figuring out where I am going to get him, hoping I have a shot somewhere other than turn 2, as he is all over the place and completely unpredictable. It's apparent I am going to have to man up and do the deed in turn 2, so I give it a go with no joy. The next time around I get next to him at the first apex of turn 2 on the outside and we slide our way down the hill side by side. As we approach 3, now I have the inside line and he gives it to me. I proceed to drive it like I stole it, I need to gap him so he doesn't take me on the back straight. I proceed to put down a great lap, and can barely see the 911 in my rear view mirror. I take the checkered flag knowing I should be golden for another class win, hoping I didn't break out. I hold my breath and at the podium I am given the first place trophy. All good, I think... I pull out Speedhive to see I ran a 1:39.2, my best lap ever at Mosport. I broke out, but Colleen didn't realize at the time! We will see if I get penalized that lap at some point, but I have the hardware! So that's it, my time as Kastner Cup chair has come to an end. I hope everyone who came enjoyed the experience as much as I do, and I look forward to next year to see how many Triumph racers will now say their June event is Mosport! And nobody got killed though I imagine a few thought they might be. The third testicle is to go fast in 1 and 2. I?m not sure what it takes to go as fast as one should in turn 8. I never got anywhere close?we both know it?s a flat out kink, not a turn. In my case that?s just theoretical. Some very good racers have ended their careers (and lives) there. Sorry I couldn?t be there with Peyote, as you can imagine, it?s a lot of fun at Mosport, though Peyote was not impressed with my performance. I suspect you would have kicked my butt. I too am pleased that our gang behaved quite well under tenuous circumstances. It takes a very special person to master Mosport in a handful of laps, and while I truly believe our talent pool runs pretty deep, there is no substitute for experience at that track. I have had championship winning Mini drivers come up to me asking how do I gain on them in turn 2, it's like getting to Carnagie Hall... Practice. OK, and confidence in your equipment. Like you and Brian for 2027. We thank you for what I know will be another great effort by you guys to show off a little gem of a racetrack in Michigan! Grattan is the polar opposite of Mosport, LOTS of technical twisty bits, one long straight. Track knowledge will certainly play a part in who finishes on top, but nothing like what we experienced the past two years at our KCups. I look forward to seeing a great turnout in Grattan next year! Henry PS. It is never too early for planning the NEXT Kastner Cup. This works because our folks volunteer to chair an event. If anybody has any ideas for 2028, reach out to Joe Alexander! There is a pretty good support system in place to help make the process go smoothly!
