Hi Rich, I can tell you that the trick used by vintage car guys to 
soften old rubber, is to place it in a freezer for a few days, then 
remove it and while frozen coat with Vaseline ( petroleum jelly ) and 
then let it thaw out. The rubber draws the Vaseline in as it thaws.  The 
process may also work in protecting rubber generally.
