Have had lots of fuel pump problems, but only symptoms were hesitation and eventual stalling (no backfires, etc.). 

Sounds more electrical to me ... sticky advance weights maybe?

My car has intermittently been acting up. 



Driving along the freeway, it has repeatedly started to hesitate and 
backfire. 



If I slowed down or pulled over it would run fine until today, where it 
refuses to do anything but idle, any attempt to give it gas results in a 
backfire. 



All indications are the fuel pump. 



But, it certainly appears to be pumping plenty of fuel when bench tested, 
the grose jets are not stuck, floats are correctly set. Carb. Dampers move 
freely, dashpot oil is at correct level, Timing is correct.
