IIRC the brown line to the regulator also feeds the ignition switch. So, 
you say you had spark when it would not start does not jive. Quite 
frankly the symptoms ( no power, backfiring, heat related ) sounds a lot 
like sticking valves to me..
I know you are aware of the issues there.... nevertheless ....
