Gavin,
If you have an exhaust valve that’s not opening completely, then you get exhaust through the intake valve when it opens. Check your valve adjustment.

Hi Gavin,
Have not encountered that problem with a Healey 6 but have several times with MGB's.
It usually turned out to be a broken valve spring or sticking valve...
