No, they were certainly on the MKII BT7s. I remember Bill Bolton getting me
to find mine for him.
Can't comment on older cars. 
And not a VIN number as I recall.....more like a serial/production run
number.

One possible tell might be if there is a VIN number on the right hand shock
tower.  Weren't those just on the BJ8s?  All, or after some point in time?
