[Healeys] Head Gasket

If there is any doubt as to the sealing capability of the three
components, you can spray a light coating of "Copper-Cote" on both
sides of the gasket before fitting it to the block. I think the proper
torque of the bolts on clean studs, in the correct order, is the most
important thing you can do to insure it does not leak. Cracking is
another story-DO NOT LET IT OVER HEAT.
I had my head repaired by Midwest Heads and (knock on wood) its still
working properly. It had the usual crack between 2-3 from overheating
at some time in its life. Both the block and head were planed as well.

Not trying to cause any confusion on this topic. The reason the Payen
gasket is marked TOP and FRONT is because the gasket WILL fit either
way. The lower photo is two gaskets, one atop the other but one is TOP
up and the other inverted. The holes all line up.
 The issue is which side of the gasket had the cylinder crimp, the
bent over seal around each cylinder, is up or down. On older copper
faced Payen gaskets the crimp is against the block or Down. Thus the
other side is marked with the Top and Front markings. Some later Payen
head gaskets use a one piece (separate piece of metal) crimp. After
this change the gasket I have looked at are not marked Top or Front.
