[Healeys] SU dampers with plastic tops

Lean mixture, no oil in damper. The engine spits back thru the carbs when cold causing the piston to jump up. This happens to many times and then the shaft is pushed thru the plastic top of the damper.

I have a couple of plastic top dampers where the steel rod has pierced the cap. How does happen? 

Anyone have a couple of spare AUC8112s?
