Listers,

For the first time ever, I put up the top on my BJ8 for the winter driving
season.  Normally, I would drive with the tonneau in place (I must be
getting old and soft).

Anyway, the top fits fine.  It is raining today so I decided to see if
there were water leaks I should worry about.  No leaks over the windshield,
Left hand door seemed OK (slight leak) and the right hand door
leaked between the top of the glass and the rubber seal on the roof.  The
right window did not go all the way up and it didn't touch the rubber at
the roof rail.

Before I take the doors apart (both of them), is there an adjustment inside
the door to either the window frame or the window mechanism that will allow
the window to fit and close properly?

Am I simply chasing a pipe dream to think I can make the car windows water
tight (SIC)?

TIA for any info that will help.

NICE SHOT-SOME HISTORY-THIS CAR AND SISTER CAR OON441 DID RACE AT THE
SEBRING 12 HR. AND BOTH suffered from an tubular exhaust pipe too
close to the starter which burned it up...remember S cars had the
carbs and exhaust on the right side of the car where the starter
lives. (pipe shows in photo)
OON441 was driven by Elliott Forbes-Robinson and co driver Roy
Jackson-Moore. Guess all those double surnames were unlucky at
Sebring.

in Detail" p.51

On a whim, I just bought a box of used BN4 gearbox parts (I don't own a 
BN4). I initially thought there might be some parts I could use in my 
BJ8, then realized that that's not likely since, of course, it's a 
center-shift. But, I do have a BN2--another side-shift--and I'm 
wondering if any of the parts could be usable in my BN2 (it looks like 
maybe a shift rod or two might be compatible). Anyone got an idea which 
parts are compatible?

OTOH, I now own a selection of gearbox parts for the later side-shift 
cars; anybody need a part for one drop me a line.

Have any of you folks purchased a rolling BN1 chassis lately? Looking for guidance for a friend that is looking for one and as we all know the pricing can vary greatly. The one he is currently looking at does not have any body panels, drivetrain, interior bits or bumpers. Chassis is a roller but will need lots of metal repairs. 
I offered that the rusty original can be compared to the cost of a replacement chassis as available from a supplier but the rest of the cost is replacement bits and labor. 
Any thoughts?

You can tack weld new T-bolts in there without too much effort.  They are
pretty basic.

I did it with regular bolts; welded them in and ground the heads down. 
One of the trickier aspects is removing the limiting pins on each end 
(they also retain the ball bearings). I don't recall how I got them out, 
but I remember it was a bit of a hassle. I replaced them with roll pins. 
I also lost a ball bearing or two; easy enough to replace (5/16" IIRC).

I have taken a number of seat tracks apart. The pins at the ends are
slightly tapered and can be easily tapped out as long as you go the right
way. I would suggest measuring the protruding ends with calipers first. As
others have mentioned, the tricky part is replacing the threaded studs.

Took one of these apart some years ago intending to rebuild them, but 
found the ball bearings had set depressions in the channel from being in 
the same place a long time.? New ones were available.

I have lubed them and replaced ball bearings but decided to buy new ones when I restored my BT7 in 2013. Moss sells them for $120 a set and AH spares sell them for 47 pounds and they are nicely chromed and all ready to just install.

I did it with regular bolts; welded them in and ground the heads down. One of the trickier aspects is removing the limiting pins on each end (they also retain the ball bearings). I don't recall how I got them out, but I remember it was a bit of a hassle. I replaced them with roll pins. I also lost a ball bearing or two; easy enough to replace (5/16" IIRC).

I suspect we all keep the seat(s) as far back as they'll go, be we 
should probably move them back-and-forth once in a while (like moving 
tires around).

putting oak wedges between the slide and the seat bottom really helped to
make the seats more comfortable for me, especially because I'm 6'1"

I don't know in which year it was supposed to be set.? Cars in the background, street scenes, etc. are usually a very good indicator.? I remember a Mini appearing at some stage, beyond that, I'm clueless.? I really should stop drinking that cheap wine and then I might pay attention to such ephemera!

So my reason for asking was this: The phone number on the shop is post 
1958, but the dress and characters look to be much later in which case 
the phone numbers would have changed again (in 1990 to 071 for Central 
London and 0171 in 1995, 0207 in 2000).

I remember the change-over from telephone exchange names, although I wasn't affected at the time.? When I ended up in London in the Earl's Court/Fulham area,? it had been changed from Fremantle to FRE to 373? (Oh the irony!? And the fact that many people thought that it had been called Freemantle, after the City in Australia, as Earl's Court was nicknamed Kangaroo Valley because of all the Australian transients living there!? Another which sticks in my mind was the Chelsea exchange of Flaxman, which had considerable cachet in the early Sixties when the King's Road was a fascinating mixture of upmarket antique shops and expensive restaurants.? Then came the "Swinging London" phase when I remember seeing Peter Sellers walking into a posh nighterie called The Arethusa and further along towards Sloane Square on the opposite side of the road stood "The Pheasantry", reputedly the home of? Charlie II's mistress Nell Gwynn, and a very posh night club.? The interior is featured in the film "Blow-up".? I remember the outrage when they built the Chesea Drugstore (Featured in "You Can't Always Get What you Want" by the Stones and an interior shot in "Clockwork Orange").? Later it became a MacDonald's, if you please!? I was there a couple of years ago before ye pestilence and it has, of course, been destroyed!

I read his collection was over 100 cars.  He has a lot of money.  Perhaps
he wasn't paying as much attention to this as some of us with lesser funds
might have. He's also suffering from ALS, I don't know when he began
feeling symptoms, but I'm willing to cut him a lot of slack.

The sad part is that Bill is dying and has just now found all this
out.
I sold him my 1974 Jensen-Healey, a fast car, which was stroked, and
it recently was sold on BAT to a buyer in New England. Bill seemed to
be very fair to deal with.
We all have been duped by some auto specialist who thought he could
make a fortune on dealing with the uneducated. I've licked my wounds.
Never got a settlement. Hank

I bought a steering wheel boss for a bolted wheel with the standard collar
type locking device from AH Spares in June 2021.  It came painted crackle
black, so I had to get it refinished in gloss black.  Part No STG108A  It
cost approx. ?100 plus p&p plus VAT at 20%

 

AH Spares website does not currently list STG108A, but it would be worth
giving them a call.

This is an option to buying a new part. Original hub with some minor machine work, a mounting ring gabbed that has been drilled and tapped to fit the new steering wheel bolt pattern is welded to machined hub and some clean up before painting black.

I have used Reliable Carriers Inc several times for cross country hauls. Total satisfaction. One AH delivery CA to PA had a full load of Ferraris plus the 100. Truck Driver would not let me drive one of the RED cars.

Bristol?s were the favourite auto of L.K.J. Setright and he wrote a brilliant history of them.  It is a worthwhile read.

Hi Keith -

I used intercitylines.com to move my BN1 from PA to CA after the conclave.
The price was reasonable and they were SUPER professional.  They kept to
their schedule and took great care of the car.  I think you can do it a
little cheaper with an open carrier, but just check around, their prices
aren't bad for the quality of service, honestly.

Yes great article. I am a real Bristol fan. As well as my BN2, I am the very lucky owner of a 1953 Bristol 403. In 2015 I discovered it languishing under a tarpaulin in a garden in Aboyne Scotland, less than half a mile from my place. It was complete, but in a sad state. I bought it, and have been restoring it over the last seven years. I'm fairly close to getting it on the road,? hopefully in 2023.
