Assuming the departure port for Rome is Civitavecchia, a side trip trip to Parma would be fun and not just for the ham.

Rent a car and do a round trip through Toscany, (Lucca, Sienna, San Gimignano, Voltera (stay away from Florence)) or perhaps visit Verona, Padua, but stay away from Rome. Sorry, I needed to go there several times for business, contract negotiations. Never liked to stay there. Even the hotels had seen better timres and were far away from cosy.

The best place for me in Rome is the fortress or castle. Its quiet and there is a good restaurant in the basement for dinner when the tourists are gone.

May be true, but cruise ship departs from Rome. We have been to Germany, France, great Britain and Spain. This is a different adventure around Greek island, Malta then get off in Barcelona. We will explore there, then Madrid.
