[Healeys] Toyota 5 speed question

It does have an angle drive, which may merely need tightening. Also, the cable may be loose behind the Speedo—a bit easier to check. I’d begin by unscrewing it from behind—yes you have to squeeze yourself under the dash—and letting it hang down where you can see it from the drivers seat. Then take a slow drive down your driveway to see whether the cable is turning inside the sheath. If so, you know the angle drive is fine. Next reinsert the end carefully into the back of the Speedo, being sure the square end inserts fully and the knurled  nut tightens (by hand) all the way home. Turn the inner cable with your fingers if needed to line it up. Then take a brief drive; if the Speedo works, the cable was loose at back. If not, the gauge needs service.
