[Healeys] Toyota 5 speed question

There are couple of things I can think of:

1.	The bearing inside of the speedometer cable is frozen. I believe you can test that by removing the cable at the angle drive connection and turn it to check if it will turn freely while connected to the speedometer. Note that the tip of the speedometer cable that goes into the speedometer cannot be longer than 3/8”. If it is it will cause the speedometer bearing to freeze.
2.	If you have the angle drive, there is a short piece of speedometer cable inside of it that makes the 90-degree bend. It can break either through wear or if the bearing inside of the speedometer freezes. To check the angle drive, you need to remove it and turn it with the speedometer cable to see if it turns the cable where it attaches to the transmission tail-piece.

The angle drive can easily be disassembled to replace the short cable inside of it. Just use an old piece of speedometer cable to replace it. You will need to square off the ends with a grinder.

Also, according to Norman Kock, there must be a washer at the angle drive connection to the transmission tail-piece.

My speedo worked for a few years, then it stopped. I'm trying to troubleshoot. So yes it was connected.
