[Healeys] Lucas Reflectors

Thanks for the kind words! I do know that regulations (I think in the UK) prohibited covering the reflectors starting sometime in 1960. So they could have used any leftover Dagmars up until then. In some cases, according to Bill Piggott’s book on the Healey Sixes, dealers simply removed the bullet lens over the reflector, retaining the wider bezel.

Robert, your car is beautiful, simply beautiful!  Mike – this may provide some indication of a change point of sorts.  My car has a build date of October 1959, very close to Robert’s, and my car also has the 100-6 horn button.  Alas, my car has the flat reflectors as I posted this morning, not the beautifully pointed Dagmars.  I wonder if there was a period of “whatever was handy in the parts bin” in late ‘59/early ’60 regarding reflectors?

Regarding the now-hard-to-find "Dagmars" rear reflectors, they were originally made in three colors: red, orange, and clear (I've seen all three original items on the cars). And while they really are a 100-6 item nearly exclusively, at least a few early 3000s (including my current Healey) had them. Some, like mine *built 12/59), also retained the 100-6 horn-button flash. And I wouldn't be surprised if a couple had the peaked bonnet and even a 100-6 grille flash, as the 3000 was originally meant simply as an improvement, not a brand-new model.

Lets not forget Dagmar...only found on the early 100-6 and named for her "pointy"
shape. Also, I believe some lenses (European) were orange rather than red. There were a few repro styles but Lucas did not make the style for the 100 BN2 (see sheet attached) Probably a Wilmot Breeden issue. Hank--------------------

I'm working on a Concours Guidelines update about reflectors and would appreciate some help.

I  have these 3 examples.

1. This type has a grooved rubber back allowing it to be inserted into a hole in the plinth pressed into the rear shroud of earlier 6 cylinder cars.

2. This is a type that I don't know about.  It appears to require an outer lens (probably the colical type) BUT it has a 10/32 thread sticking out the back such as the later 100 type did.

3. This type has the same back side as #1 but the front looks to me to be of the type fitted to the plinth on the later 100's.

I suspect that #s 2 and 3 are not Healey but am open to being corrected.

M
