I second the motion for Dot5.There are a lot of misconceptions about it, unfortunately. I've been using it for 30 years at least and have had no problems. It's nice to know that when you work on the brakes you don't have to worry about removing paint.Stephen, BJ8Sent from my Galaxy

I took the fittings to a local hydraulic supply shop and got the right size sealing washers for less than $2.Ira's story is a great reason to use DOT 5 silicone brake fluid. It is not a matter of if our cars will leak, but when. DOT 5 does not harm paint and is not hygroscopic, which is a major benefit for cars that are not driven regularly.Best regards,HaroldOn Sat, Oct 10, 2026 at 9:22 AM Hank Leach via Healeys <healeys at autox.team.net> wrote:Well our friends at Moss, and Roger Moment, seem to feel that it is the solution to the drip:

Viton or fluoroelastomer is not compatible with glycol based brake fluid.
I went thru this with o rings in a hydraulic throw out bearing in my MGB V8. The Viton ones didn't even last as long as the nitrile ones, and both materials failed.
It needs to be EPDM.

IRA- as you know brake fluid is a bad thing. However, since it is a petroleum product I use kerosene to first clean and dilute it then follow-up with some paint thinner (mineral spirits) to prep the area for primer /paint. Its a mess. The repair for the cannister is developed by Roger Moment and available from Moss. These Viton wrapped washers will not be eaten by the fluid and they tighten well to stop the drip. My leaking fluid has been sourced to the brake reservoir. Does anyone know how to nutralize the corrosive properties of the fluid?
My paint is lifting in places.
